@Heartbreakid Old Mercedes Benz best...200 mean 2.0 Litres...only a few Models don't match...like the W116 450 SEL.6.9...It is a near 6.9 Litres Engine.

or more recently (ok not so recent since that is already over 30 years ago) the 190E 2.0 or 190E 1.8 since the 190E did not have a 1.9 litre, but it was to put it a step lower than the "normal" 200 which was that time the W123 going on to the W124 ..

Yes. When see 300SEL, we know its engine cc is 3.0 litres. With the increment of the numbers the bigger the cc. Now is all madness.

So our local tow-kays in order to save face, they detached their E200 badge and pasted over somethings like E230 or E250 etc, and I heard from the horses' mouths like many even went to CnC and banged tables that they would boycott the brand if they didn't enhance the badging labels on their cars!

So CnC feedbacked to MB HQ and the latter decided to restructure their models nomenclature.
 

So... In a way, Singapore market is responsible for stirring up the madness in the numbers of the Mercedes once correlated arrangement. What a stirrer we are. 🤣

@Heartbreakid Yes..SEL..S stand for S-Class,E stand for Fuel Injection,L stand for Long Wheelbase...SEC...S Class, Fuel Injection,Coupe.

The Maluness is not so much on the numbering of the models. It is because they were hailed by pax waiting by the road side. When they see white Merc approaching, thinking that they were cabs, they would raise they hands to stop the "taxi".

Since then, buyers would pick colours other than white.

No one will complain as that is most probably the ride during their life time. So, as loyal customers, they would want the same brand when they go over.

@DOBIEMKZ Talk about badging,last time Alfa Romeo have a model 164,but that model sold badly in Hong Kong,the Italian don't know the reason,then the Hong Kong AD told the Italian,164 means ''All the Way Die''.the Italian then changed the model to 168..''All the Way Rich''..the Sales pick up.

AR 164 is beautiful, no other car had suck slick designed during that time.

Ya. I love its slick rear lights and its clean center console design. Its facelifted model giving it a slim headlights make the car looks even better.

If this is true, local tow-kays are even lamer than I had assumed.

HowLianness has no boundary. I accompanied my bro to his friend's place. The friend was a Tan Sri and he had a garage of big and vintage cars on addition to those modern ones. His then current car was a Merc 320. He had the badge changed to 420.🤐

My former boss bought a E200 Kompressor which was only 1.8 litres.

What I read is the number is never indicative of the horse power. It was supposed to indicate the engine capacity initially. You get a 3digit number x 10, that is supposed to be the engine capacity. 

Later they go by engine code. The same code number can have various engine capacities. Like A180 can have a 1.6 litre engine. 

Now, it is even more rojak:

"A 1.5-litre petrol powers the C180 and C200 with 168bhp and 201bhp respectively (the latter can be had with 4MATIC four-wheel drive)." 

wow. i din know c200 is using 1.5. but 1.5 with 200bhp is pretty impressive i say.
