Err... the per unit cost is really eye popping, even taking into consideration it must include lotsa maintenance related startup. 

Gotta wonder if it's sustainable long term... wondering..  not saying I know.

We are not buying hardware. More like buying group insurance policy. 

But anyone introducing stealth jets into this region will likely upset the balance. So can foresee the arrival of these jets onto our shores in the middle to far future.

Read that the Israeli f35 are really effective. Some mission already carried out with impunity. Resulting in the firing of Iran air for e chief

Imagine u can see the f35 taking off on yr bino but nothing registers on  yr radar. What u cant track u cant shoot down

The jap are converting their helicopter carriers to take f35. Read the expense is very high. Need harden the flight deck, bigger compartment for plane, fuel and weapon storage. 

There are many specialised role on a carrier which probably requires to deploy regulars instead of NSf. One small carrier could potentially suck up a big percentage of navy regulars

no PLA no problem, still have TAB...no tenggah no problem, still have reserved site for emergency in most estates...remember Apache...? Tour de LCK also can all lights out within a day or two... besides, we also have kiosks in the sky to further the reach...and for the return of course.

However, no radar also can bring down ace like tornado...iraqi AA batteries just needed to juah the rounds into the sky...

our then CDF WC even visited our last line of ADA (discounting the hand held) the 35mm unit after that gulf war for the first time in unit history even though it was established donkey years ago...

I won’t discount one potential petite AC in our shallow water...global warming helps in a way...hey, can create jobs too. MOD huat ah!!

Why the fark the report need to compare with apple to orange? 

WTF they are trying to stir? 

It's like comparing spending 10k on an electronic gate and CCTV versus a 6k annual team dinner. 

One is a single capital expenditure The other is recurring annual spend. Each serve different purpose. 

Will the author compare his own spend on if he buy a 3k bicycle versus his kid monthly allowance $200?

Will he ask why he spend so little on his kid allowance? is it fair to his kid?

It was reported yesterday that the US has approved the sale of up to 12 F-35 fighter jets to Singapore for around US$2.75 billion or S$3.7 billion (‘US approves $2.75 bn fighter jet sale to Singapore‘, 10 Jan).

AFP reported that despite its small size, Singapore spends a large chunk of its national budget on defence.

“Singapore is a strategic friend and major security cooperation partner and an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Asia-Pacific region,” said the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

The F-35 is an advanced supersonic stealth plane able to evade radar detection. Its advanced electronic warfare capabilities also enable pilots to locate and track enemy forces, jam radars and disrupt attacks. Other advanced weaponry Singapore has includes F-15 fighter jets, Apache helicopters and submarines in its arsenal.

No doubt, the acquisition of advanced stealth planes able to evade radar and attack any targets covertly without being discovered would naturally heighten the concerns of Singapore’s neighboring countries. It’s not known how they would respond to this latest acquisition of advanced stealth planes by Singapore.

12 F-35s cost more than entire MSF budget

It is noted that the S$3.7 billion slated for the purchase of the 12 F-35s is already more than the entire 2019 budget for the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF).

According to the 2019 budget, the total expenditure for MSF is projected to be S$3 billion. Of this, S$2.88 billion is for operating expenditure and S$115.66 million for development expenditure.

The Family Development Programme takes up the largest share of MSF’s S$2.88 billion operating expenditure at S$2.08 billion. This is followed by its Social Policy and Services Group Programme which takes up S$479.14 million.

The Family Development Programme covers 2 important functions – those of the Family Development Group and Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA).

The ECDA regulates and develops the early childhood sector in Singapore, overseeing key aspects of children’s development below the age of 7, across both kindergartens and child care centres. It helps to expand the provision of affordable and quality early childhood services, and to transform and uplift the early childhood profession. These include the provision of more preschool places through its various schemes as well as subsidies to improve affordability of childcare for Singaporean families.

The Social Policy and Services Group Programme on the other hand, gives out grants for social uplifting programmes like strengthening services for the vulnerable, persons with disabilities, children, youth and families. It also supports the administration and provision of social assistance to low-income Singaporeans.

The late Martin Luther King Jr once warned about spending on ever increasing military defence programme at the expense of social spending. At the height of the Vietnam War in 1967, he gave the following famous quote in a speech in New York (‘Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence‘):

 

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.

I always wondered, in land scarce Singapore, would it be feasible to convert a VLCC into a floating air platform? Sure its a huge target but with no crude in the tanks, that is a lot of blank spaces and bulkhead space and reserve buoyancy to absorb almost any conventional attack short of really massive strikes. Fill most of the (subdivided) empty spaces with non-combustible Styrofoam like material and it will even be near impossible to sink even if you sliced it in half with a fantasy superlaser.

And even the 35A would have space to take off!

Crazy leh..... honestly, Malaysia will be much much better off joining the indo korea jet project if they want. It's already well on track,  technology less problems. 

Time, cost, quality all in favour of indo Korea jet.

Malaysia will be crazy to dump money into Turkey for this.
