Thatcher sent her best friend fatty Patten to be governor when he lost his seat at the general election. To that point, it was a handful of HKer in charge under the governor, basically handpicked. Add to that, he finally authorized the building of a new airport with most contracts to UK companies allowing the UK government to take out some of their "investment".

The point is those protesting never really knew HK before the handover so assumed what little rights they had were always there. Older HKer didn't protest unless they were being supported because a) they never had democracy when young and b) the governor and citizens then didn't give two sh!ts about who ran the country so long as everybody had a place to live, and a way to earn a living.

Which country is truly democracy and how do one define it? What has democracy done for their people who enjoy democracy? Is Singapore considered a democracy country? Why would other countries preach democracy to another without any self interest while they colonized others and consider themselves as democracy?

That was kinda my point, the protesters themselves were tools. They have/had no idea what they were fighting for, guided by those at the self-serving top.

I don't know why people don't expect more China laws to be imported into HK. At its limits the 2-System principle would time out at 50yrs and argument can be made this is a much-needed transition period.

Two sides to every story but the irony is the HK protesters fleeing to the UK are now, or about to be, under a very similar law.

The way it was imported looks very very clumsy.

To the extent that it sounds amateurish.

It looks more and more like JUST "another China city".

That's the anticipation from July 1st, 1997.

It is more the case when I have travel there after COVID, but the problem is, it isn't just another China city because hearing from my HK friends, the likes of Shenzhen, Shanghai, and other "Tier 1" are way ahead of HK in many day-to-day aspects. An awful lot of people travel daily from HK to Shenzhen for eating and shopping etc. more so than SG go to JB because getting to China is easier than getting to JB.

When USA bomb and kill others and we tell them not to, would they obey? First is to get your own house cleaned up then kepo on others business. Should we tell Malaysia not to have the bumiputera policy? Ask USA to ban guns like us, no good for their people?

When you have power, you write the rules. You bomb them, kill them, dethroned them if they don't obey. You only run out when they unit to kick you out like in Vietnam and Afghanistan.

Of course, currently only Taiwan, phillipnes, S Korea and Japan in Asia that fully understand USA. West side you have Canada, Germany, France. They are doing very well for their people 😆 😊

Now you understand why Churchill said "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the rest."

My personal opinion is democracy is over rated, and those countries that profess to being democratic are, themselves, not....... Not really.

The protestors played right into China's hand and gave them excuses or reasons to have a tighter rein on the island.

Furthermore, they damaged the island's economy, and livelihoods of many that did not create trouble. Those can afford, either feld or left. Leaving a worse off HK for others to pick up the mess they created.

And they did that in the most irrational ways. They attacked and stalked the families of policemen, but when they were hurt in the protest, they reported to the police expecting the police to take action and help them.

When the PLA came in in their tonners, the furthest they dared to go was to shine laser pointers at them. They dared to attack their "own people" which is the HK police but balls shrank when they saw the PLA.
