StarHub job cuts result of strategic transformation plan

We thank Mr Tan Kar Quan for his comments (Laying off staff not always the best strategy, May 25).

Telecommunications companies globally and in Singapore are being disrupted by issues ranging from digitalisation and cloud-based services to changing consumer preferences and the ongoing convergence in information and communications technologies (ICT).

As mobile, broadband and content penetration rates are already very high in Singapore, StarHub has to continually transform its operating model and seek growth in adjacent segments, such as cyber security and enterprise ICT solutions.

As part of our strategic transformation plan aimed at consistently delivering a better customer experience, we embarked on simplifying and redesigning our company structure, product offerings and internal processes last year.

This regrettably led to a reduction of roles and colleagues from our team - reducing our workforce is not our strategic intent.

Increasing our capabilities, accelerating growth, offering a better brand experience, and adapting to the realities of the rapidly changing market we operate in are among targets at the core of our strategy.

To this end, our transformation plans will always include the reskilling, retraining and redeployment of our employees to be able to handle future functions.

We will also continue to explore opportunities to accelerate our growth through the launch of innovative services and the acquisition of companies.

The acquisition of companies offers us access to services, technologies, customers and new talent that otherwise will require many years of development with no certainty of success.

A successful business strategy is inclusive of many growth initiatives, home-grown and acquired, and leverages the collective wisdom and capabilities of everyone at StarHub.

Peter Kaliaropoulos

Chief Executive Officer

StarHub

Oh dear, i dunno how many have been affected.

too slow, not nimble enough and no culture of innovation

same same  here. in the disruptive technology era now, rice bowl can be replaced very quickly, the old  thinking of learning a skill and keep deepening it is no longer viable.  Even to learn the latest skills and knowledge, one needs to be very fast and be able to compete with the younger generation, it is never easy. even i heard driving grab is not easy.

This is why I left a high paying senior management job to venture into Real Estate  quite awhile back.

Flying around, rubbing shoulders with CEOs and BODs, stressing over a thousand staff worldwide is not what I envision to do long term. It is good to climb &  reach there, but once there, we must know when to let go and build something on your own terms. Money is not everything.....but health and relationship with family is.

The world is changing rapidly and job security is the victim of all these changes.  In my previous job, I have fired and retrench many people, and I do not need to wait for the day to be my turn. The earlier one has the courage to do something and sustain on their own, the earlier one will be able to get away from all these technology disruptions and lose direction when they are asked to go.

TVB also could see that SH was too slow in moving on to app-based streaming. Why still need to pay for their lousy set-up boxes ?? They are even slower than Google Chromecast, and provides no value add.

SH is still relying on tying people to 2-year contract so that they can relax for two years while the world goes by with new innovation.

The TVB part is just a small dent to their business model

If you read the CEO message above carefully,  they are restructuring to probably also move into B2B business......hence the enterprise ICT solutions that he mentioned.

If they are shifting from B2C to B2B, a lot of re-skilling need to be done, hence the retrenchments.

Starhub offerings were good at one point of time.....they failed to follow the trend, keeps charging exhorbitant price for an ever decreasing content.....even if they win the epl contract i doubt people will stay with them. Next month i will be giving back their tv and fibre broadband eventhough they are giving out good recontract promotions.

I have been in the exact situation as you were but my pay may not be as high paying. During my lousiest year I was forced to release more than 100 headcounts of professionals and managers in less than 4 quarters, these were not low cost labors. This was over and above the worries about the monthly business commit, i have to painfully decide where to take out people yet without affecting my business. After that I decided that enough was enough, so i jumped ship but very soon I realised that I was back in the same endless treadmill game, where the speed dial will increase, the angle of incline will go up, i just have to run harder and faster. A couple of my peers have decided to retire early without even taking a package, some were forced out. I choose to hang in there to do my best to help the people around me, my point is if I am gone, someone else who takes over may do even more silly things. ......so I will stay around until the day to come....meantime, value add to others but I remind myself i need learn to let go.

And till today, I have no regrets or resentment about anything. we should feel blessed that we have been there and done it.

Never had cable TV installed. Straight away jump into Netflix when streaming starts to take over.  Now netflix also may be into trouble when Disney is going to launch their own streaming platform and pulled out all disney titles from Netflix.

Very unusual to leave a senior management high paying job to go to the ground and start all over again in real estate

By a certain age, it is tough to be running around as a real estate agent

Sometimes being able to pick up your kids after school and be their chauffeur is also not a bad thing.

These people only good in a monopoly situation.

If you want cable only had Starhub.

So sign with them or go fly kite.

Too bad now no more monopoly for them.

Most dangerous situation is to be in a monopoly.

Management grow weak and lazy.
