KATHMANDU (AFP) - Three more climbers have died on Everest, expedition organisers and officials said Friday (May 24), taking the toll from a deadly week on the overcrowded world's highest peak to seven.

 

"Two more Indian climbers have died on Everest yesterday," said Mira Acharya, spokeswoman for Nepal's Tourism Department, while expedition organisers confirmed the third fatality.

 

Kalpana Das, 52, reached the summit but died on Thursday afternoon while descending, as a huge number of climbers queued near the top of Mount Everest.

 

Another Indian climber, 27-year-old Nihal Bagwan, also died on his way back from the summit.

 

“He was stuck in the traffic for more than 12 hours and was exhausted. Sherpa guides carried him down to Camp 4 but he breathed his last there,” said Keshav Paudel of Peak Promotion.

 

An Austrian climber died on the northern Tibet side of the mountain, his expedition organiser said. The 65-year-old died close to the summit on his descent.

 

An Indian and American climber both died on the mountain on Wednesday. Last week, an Indian climber died and an Irish mountaineer is presumed dead after he slipped and fell close to the summit.

 

Mountaineering in Nepal has become a lucrative business since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first ascent of Everest in 1953.

 

The Himalayan nation has issued a record 381 permits costing US$11,000 (S$15,000) each for this year’s spring climbing season, triggering bottlenecks en route to the summit after poor weather cut down the number of climbing days.

 

Most Everest hopefuls are escorted by a Nepali guide, meaning more than 750 climbers were expected to tread the same path to the top in the current season.

 

At least 140 others have been granted permits to scale Everest from the northern flank in Tibet, according to expedition operators. This could take the total past last year’s record of 807 people reaching the summit.

 

Many Himalayan mountains – including Everest – are at peak climbing season, with the window of good weather between late April and the end of May.

 

 

 

At least seven other climbers have died on other 8,000-metre Himalayan peaks this season, while two are missing.

I think the Everest climbing in the country lacks safety regulation. It's a known issue. So many climbers young and old succumb to exhaustion while waiting in queue for others just show how bad the crowd control is.

It's actually not easy and also permit is not cheap. But too many YOLO and many go unprepared. Failure and accident rate quite high.

That begs the question: What's so special n YOLO abt climbing Everest if so many hv done it?...

Just wondering if this is still the achievement it once was as overcrowding and death tarnishes this ascent to the highest point on Earth.

 

Not knocking the achievements of those who have reached the peak but with $, safety and heavy duty littering polluting Everest, some concerted regulations and perhaps limit in numbers going up should be in place. Or else this human desire to conquer Everest becomes ugly and the undesirable side of the human race rears its face on the beauty of nature which is so ironic to say the least!

When I was climbing steps up to mount kota kinabalu I already saw local guides become bag carriers for their "climbers".

 

Only for the unprepared and untrained for the trip.

Those who climbed mt Everest once in their life will need to have sherpas carry almost everything they need.

 

Irony is that these sherpas made it to the top of the world a few times a year without any form of glory or fame.... 

 

Even Sir Edmund Hillary wouldn't have made it without Sherpa Tenzing... And yet who is more famous?

these people are called porters, most of the porters are from an ethnic groups native called Sherpa, so they are also called Sherpa.  

 

About caddy and golf, just like to point out the difference between put and putt in golf:

Put  - to place a ball into a hole.

putt - attempt to place a ball into a hole.
