just 3 layers to survive the cold? talking thermal wear alone i already have 4 pieces but from uniqlo. i might have to get something more suitable for the european cold like what the others have advised. saw one from north face $600+. expensive but maybe good investment. i heard snow boots are available for rental? gotta do more research once i confirm my tour booking. tks bro for the tips.

thats the thing. if its cloudy and cant see the lights... also no choice. this is something i need to remind my gf. there is no need to feel so disappointed. chase lights but it should not be sole purpose lor. there's always other experience, culture etc. only thing scared is if finland cannot see dunno where else she wanna go. :TT_TT::nosebleed: -25 degrees is crazy!!!

10 days of seeing all white i dunno if my mind can take it. i heard seeing all white and being in winter long term can be depressing. for me for sure since im not a fan of the cold

Lol I would like to mention the 3-400k+ Russian soldiers who froze or starved to death in the finnish forests during ww2.

Finland should be Cheaper right. Scandinavia is really expensive.

It's one of my bucket list to see aurora borealis too. But will wait until my kids are older. And also probably just try Iceland at most. I don't like too cold.

Finland is slightly cheaper but i will choose Iceland over Finland anyday. Iceland has more to offer in terms of scenery although Helsinki is a really pretty city. And Icelandic people are a lot friendlier, Finns are adverse to chit chat.

There are plenty of things to do besides waiting for Aurora to show up at night. Couple of other activities we experienced besides skiing for 5 days included huskies ride, reindeer ride, sledding and ice karting. The ice karting is especially fun if you like drifting and the padded overall that is provided keeps one really warm in the freezing outdoor [thumbsup] - see pix on ice/snow track! We didn't have time for igloo stay and visit to the ice hotel but these are some of the other activities that can be done. Do factor in that the days during winter are really short - pitch dark by about 3pm which is great of Aurora provided not cloudy [:)]. As for pricing, budget on average €80/pax for each activity - not sure about pricing across the other Scandinavian / Nordic countries.

Talking about skiing, the runs in Levi are relatively wide but short. When we were there in mid-Dec, not many lifts/runs were open yet and the longest one that was open is about 2km. Markings are a bit lacking and snow condition decent. Overall, not the best but still enjoyable

-25?? Seriously? How was outdoor activities? I still think places near the sea like Iceland or if u want to experience polar nights like lofoten is better. Much milder winter. Lofoten has really spectacular scenery.

I spend summer in lofoten to see the midnight sun but it sucks after a while.... I need night/day cycle... I am not sure I can take spending a week of polar nights at -25...

Northern light is much depend on luck . is not a guaranteed occurrence.

I went to iceland in early oct 2017 and spend 8 days there and i was lucky to see northern light in 1 night when the KP level is 7. Almost half of the entire iceland could see the light. I went Iceland not for northern light but to enjoy the natural scenery and natural attractions, The ring road route 1 is one of the best scenic drive in the world.

Iceland is a good place as it has only 1 international airport which is the KEF and u can start your northern light chasing once u collect your rental car because northern light can be seen anywhere in iceland. Unlike Finland and Norway, u still have to go further up. Flights to helsinki and oslo are not enough.

That's one heck of a drive. Might be faster flying from one point to another, rather than doubling back?

How do you intend to drive? Amsterdam to Denmark, then ferry to Norway, then Sweden, then Oresund bridge to Denmark and then to Amsterdam? About 3000 km round trip? Probably takes 4-6 days of hard driving?
