Tablet is indeed the way forward...

I have '2 kids', younger one 18 yo...

Their time, game-boy, handheld PS, x-box, gaming pc, smart phone...

These things took away a lot of attention & connection within family...

I thought I could manage/control when they play, how long they play...I was wrong, they grew up quickly...

I did said...avoid, delay,..just saying

If die-die must have, any tablet also can...long knife or short knife, equally deadly..

Often when u see family dinners at restaurants w the grandparents or relatives, the kids will ignore everyone n just stayed glued to their tablets or phones. Even when there are other kids of the same age at the same table....

Different world liao.

My kids are quite electronic device lite in their play time and entertainment.

They can watch videos on certain days of the week. Of course sometimes exceptions are made depending on whether they are sick or really very cranky.

They used to play with the tablet for those children game apps once a week. But stopped doing so for the last few months.

Depends on the personality of the child as well.

Me and the wife are on the phone though quite a lot  [laugh]

Probably my kids usage are the lower quartile of most young children. But the other extreme is also not healthy for the child in an economic/competitive sense.

I know one of my friend's children. Sec 1 and still not allowed to have a handphone. I was pretty shocked when i found out. I think that will limit this boy's understanding of how technology can be used to enhance your abilities.

IMHO, if you can avoid introducing tablet to 5 yo, please do so...if you can delay providing a smart phone, please delay as well..

Trust me, it will becomes his/her obstacle in normal learning environment when comes to age.

Buy a ball, a frisbee, a float, bring them outside better...

I agree with this very much.

My first hand experience: I teach (digital/UI/UX) on Fridays part-time (Ending in 2 weeks), poly/jc-age students. They are different from our generation. Most of them always trying to get results with minimal or least amount effort. Of course, always end up, lousy end results because there is no such thing as shortcuts in my industry. Why? Because they are brought up on instant gratification. They don't know any better and they cannot imagine not getting what they want instantly. Putting in time and effort to get something done right or something done well is an alien concept to them.

Delaying these devices to kids will not hamper any of their development in digital skills. Not like they are going to be some hot-shit developer or UI/UX designer in primary school. They are just the end-users and without proper life skills, will not have the ability to question, comprehend or learn the hows/whys of the products they are using. IMO. There is NOTHING to be gained from using these tablets at that age. You will just be conditioning another child to have an "instant gratification" complex and grooming an addiction to an electronic device.

There is a reason why the richest people and tech-giant parents are not letting their kids have mobile devices at an early age.

If you have a choice, I'd say avoid it too.

Why tablet?

Toys to stimulate their imagination and creativity is so much better.

The problem is when you don't let them play, one the kid's parent will let and all the other kids will crowd around like he's the luckiest boy on earth. Such is the parenting environment in SG now. In angmohland and jippunland you don't see as much of such problem.

Solution. don't bring your kids out to gatherings haha

yeah lah, there's no hard and fast rule.

I'll let the kids watch a bit of video if they have finished their meals fast outside or if really something very boring like waiting in queue at legoland/disneyland.

Looking to buy a tablet for a 5 year child for Christmas.

Basically with wifi only and to be used indoor.

Preferably not more than $300.

Any recommendation is appreciated.

There is a reason why Steven Jobs and Bill gates do not let their own children have exposure to all such devices.

By doing such at such a young age, that's where all the ADHD and etc come in.

Parents must also make the effort to keep things interesting for the kids.

If u don't even bring pen and paper/books/some simple games out, then don't blame the kids for being bored while waiting for food to come.

But once u reach upper primary, peer influence will matter more frankly.

Managing screen time is something every parent has to be aware of. I think more and more parents do realise this.

But they themselves are screen time heavy lol

Lower primary no problem. It's all about the parents. Upper primary and sec school onwards very different.

I mean we had our computer games, irc, icq etc. They have their social media platforms.

If u want to be a tech dinosaur, it just means u are a social outcast period.

My kids are not there at that stage yet, but i don't see it changing any time soon.

Anyway, this is good reminder to spend less time on MCF lol  [laugh]

Teens will get addicted to screens if they see screens when they are young?

Isn't that a good thing? When working they will be stuck to a screen for 8 - 10 hours a day.

Better get them addicted to it when they are young right?

:D
