ChaosMyth 5th Gear October 21, 2018 Share October 21, 2018 TAIPEI: At least 17 people were dead and 126 others injured after a train derailed on Taiwan's east coast on Sunday afternoon (Oct 21), authorities said. The train, Puyuma Express 6432, was travelling from Taitung and derailed near Yilan county near the coast, on a railway popular among tourists. "As of 6.30pm there are 17 dead on site and 126 people injured," the Taiwan Railways Administration said in a statement, adding that the train had been moving between two stations in Yilan County before the derailment occurred. Taiwan's central government said that rescue services were at the scene and that the premier had been notified and was highly concerned over the safety of the travelers. At least six compartments of the train overturned, said Taiwan Railways Administration, according to Apple Daily. Taiwan's Central News Agency reported that more than 30 people were still trapped in the train early on Sunday evening. Lala81 Hypersonic October 21, 2018 Share October 21, 2018 I've taken that route before. Scary man, I thought Taiwan rail had a relatively good safety record before this.
Carbon82 Moderator October 21, 2018 Share October 21, 2018 Channel 5 News reported that the high casualties rate was due to non-availability of seat belt? Are all trains required to have seat belt? I don't remember it was available even for trains I took in Europe... Btw, witnesses statements were that the train has been wobbling before it derailed, maybe it has ran over something prior to that? If that is the case, the victims are really unlucky. May the deceased RIP.

That is exactly my question. I took ICE in Europe, capable of ~300kph also no seat belts, and in fact some expert ever mentioned that seat belt will do more harm than good in a high speed crash. I am seeing that the relevant authorities has been trying to pull a fast one, in order to divert attention on the question about responsibility...

Spring Moderator October 22, 2018 Share October 22, 2018 this particular TWD train service not allowed to stand one... else the no of casualties wld have been more... Ya shld be but I’m scared to think if those trains which allow standing derails, how tragic this would be and we ourselves are taking trains daily whilst standing though our speeds much slower

It's the India culture. Who in the sane mind would want to stand or even walk to any train tracks? They would also walk along the roads and not on the pavement, cross the roads slowly by taking their sweet time even with glaring on coming traffic. You can say their sense of danger as non existing. They are in a world of their own.

Only plausible explanation is that the area is jam packed and people couldn't move away. ↡ Advertisement
