Wind30 Turbocharged October 20, 2018 Author Share October 20, 2018 (edited) Now we know why http://ricemedia.co/current-affairs-features-cna-regardless-of-class-too-perfect-dug-deeper/ I read this article and the entire CNA documentary, I thought the CNA documentary gave a pretty fair and objective view. The show is 50 mins and I don't think they can put in everything into the show. Did they edit it in a way to put across a message? Certainly. Is the message false? I don't think so. I don't agree with a few points (like education is still a good social leveler) but most of what they presented seems fair and objective. Sometimes, I think we parents play a big part. When I was young, I NEVER got to travel as my family don't go overseas... I still remember now a conversation I had in sec 1 with my good pal what we are doing in the holidays. He was saying about a vacation he was going to have. It was nothing malicious or condescending but it obviously stuck with me since I remembered it for 30 years.... So when I bring my kids overseas, I will inadvertently say to my kids, "your parents so nice, bring you for vacation often. you better appreciate it cuz papa when young never got to go anywhere" It is kind of like "bragging" to your kids just so they understand how "lucky" they are. Maybe it might give the kids the impression that going overseas is a "big" thing. Edited October 20, 2018 by Wind30 ↡ Advertisement
Wind30 Turbocharged October 20, 2018 Author Share October 20, 2018 To me, the most important thing about the CNA documentary is not they used a stereotypical portrayal of the class divide (which is a fair reflection of reality) but rather they survey results posted in the show. The high SES people don't think that EDUCATION is one of the top three factors of success and "knowing the right people" is the number one factor, while the poor people think education as important. The high SES people are the ones who have succeeded and if they think that succeeding is not about education but knowing the right people, this shows that the "meritocracy" that we are so proud off is perhaps no longer there.... The rich people are just favoring their kind and making the class divide worse. It does not help when our government scraps things like the estate tax. Turboguy 5th Gear October 20, 2018 Share October 20, 2018 especially singaporeans Yeah if their children do well its their own doing. If their children don't do well its the school fault, its the teacher, its the gov, its the society. I would like to be honest and tell everyone I didn't do well in school and it was all my own fault. The girl sitting next to me was very pretty and I couldn't concentrate. If I wasn't a lesbian inside I would not have been so distracted and would have done better in school. I really hope people can be more honest and tell the truth more. Its so rare to hear people telling the truth but its so refreshing. There is a real danger that people that BS all the time and they start to believe their own BS and now live in their own world.
Philipkee Twincharged October 20, 2018 Share October 20, 2018 I never watched the show but two cents here. 1) I think the role of the government is to give the poor and chance to catch up and not pull the rich down to make it equal. Hence, no comments on the abolishment of estate tax. 2) it's more about who you know. But the trick is, without education, how likely is it for the average person to meet someone influential? Excluding family connections. A person who is educated will likely go to a good school and mix with people who might be connected or potentially connected. Please don't misunderstand. Sometimes it's really who you know and education paves the way for that. A common example. As we get older, how many of us apply for jobs solely based on classified ads without a single person inside to recommend you the job and willing to be your character reference? 3) Education is important. Unfortunately, too much emphasis is on grades and not character development. 4) luck plays a part but usually a small part unless you were really luck to win a few million dollars or something. But without education and character building and knowing the correct people, even if you were lucky to win a million dollars, the chance is that you will still lose everything.
Sosaria Twincharged October 20, 2018 Share October 20, 2018 A good education may not make a student from low SES background become newly-rich but it will at least improve his SES (through employment in a professional, well-paid job) for further benefit of his future generation. That's the guarantee and SG has done well in this area. ↡ Advertisement
