Not all the time. Only when it is dangerous to keep left. Like if there's a driver behind who looks like he is impatient and going to squeeze past, I'll take up the whole lane to protect myself. Either he changes lane to overtake or if he still chooses to overtake near me, I have space to move to the left.

Yup. I don't agree with people who take the law in their own hands. Personally, I prefer to just make a report and let the police handle. Especially the hit-and-run drivers. Reported 2 drivers for hit-and-run this year. Brushed my elbow when overtaking me but did not stop when I shouted at them. Sadly, TP only charges these hit-and-run drivers with dangerous driving which means they can still drive if they had the full points before the offence.

You are using your life to prove your point.

You can argue that there are incompetent drivers or drivers who do it on purpose. Then how about those bus drivers, truck drivers who drives a bigger vehicle and have much more blind spots? When the life is gone under the wheels of these bigger vehicles, is it worth it?

If cycling on the roads is dangerous, have the flexibility to use other lanes like cycling lanes, shared pavements, etc. Your way to try to prove your point not just affect bad drivers, but also good drivers, other commuters and businesses.

But you are using your life to prove a point. As you said, there are incompetent drivers and if one day you meet one, he or she cause serious injury to you...is it worth it?

Actually if TP charged them with reckless or dangerous driving, it is 24 points plus court. Probably they charged them with careless driving which is 6 points $170 or driving without consideration for other road users which is 9 points $170.

I'm not trying to prove a point. I have been cycling on the roads regularly for the past 12 years. By taking the lane when there is a dangerous driver, I get alot more space to avoid an accident if they try to be reckless. The 2 hit-and-run accidents I had this year, both times, I was not paying attention and did not notice they were going to try to overtake without changing lanes thus I gave them the opportunity to overtake so close that they grazed my elbow. Both times, my elbow had some bruising. That's why I still feel that it is safer to take the lane when there is an incompetent driver behind me rather than moving left and giving myself even less space.

For the 2 hit-and-run cases. I know the outcome was they were charged with dangerous driving. Because those 2 were considered accidents, TP will update with the offence they were charged with. 24 demerit points still can drive right? Just that no more points left to deduct. The others that only overtook closely I don't know the outcome. TP will only reply action has been taken. But one of the IOs ever told me that for those that did not result in accident, they can choose to charge with inconsiderate or reckless. Or in some cases, no reply at all. I do know some get charged for reckless driving as I have had to go to court a few times to testify this year.

For the big trucks, the same thing applies. I move to take the whole lane since it is even more unlikely they can even overtake a cyclist safely without changing lanes given their width. Anyway, taking the whole lane means I got more space and I can see traffic on the next lane if I need to take evasive action. But so far, heavy vehicles actually give me less problems on the roads than other cars. Its usually the cars that overtake really closely. Heavy vehicles and buses usually give very large gap when overtaking.

Cycling on the road is dangerous if you don't know how to protect yourself.

And how many really know how to protect themselves without inconveniencing others?

Some of the cyclists rather put ego above their own protection.

I supposed you asking about hogging the bus lane and cause a massive tailback for the many buses and passengers ?

There aren't many roads in Singapore that have only one lane. So I guess most of the time there isn't much of a problem. I get blocked by slow moving heavy vehicles more often than cyclists.
