Engine oil color after servicing

You should be familiar with doing it from the behind. It is not the only way. Another way is doing from the front or top side siphon. Insert your (vac) tube into the dip stick hole, then start the pump, and once you have enough (say 1L), withdraw your tube. This is called the early withdrawal method. Ofc if you use from the behind method, once all the sai zhap starts to gush out, neither sticking your finger in or attempt to screw back is going to be helpful.

Haha I like your detailed explanation.  [thumbsup]

Seriously so many conspiracy theory.

Please go back AD if so unsecured.

ADs don't even let you see how they service the car.  [mad]

Any workshops buy engine oil in drums?  [laugh]

Yes, serviced my car at Loyang (Spark Comfort Delgro) long ago and remembered that I used their promo in-house oil which were in drums.

Sometimes engine oil can be dark (looks black sometimes) but its still effective to use. But, in general clean oil indicates an amber color. The oil gets darker means that such factor affects it such as high heal, contaminants or worse  there is an additive which causes it to darken. I suggest you directly ask the car shop you have it serviced for proper explanation on that matter.

Turbocharged

I switched from Mobil 1 to Castrol Edge, both are 5W30.

Registered at least 10% increase in fuel consumption.

Could it be due to the engine oil used?

Could be. Not all 5w30 are the same. One could be in the lower end of the viscosity range and the other on the opposite end.

Which Mobil1?

Which Castrol Edge?

Turbocharged

Switched from Mobil 1 ESP to Castrol Edge Professional. Both are 5W30.

Fuel consumption is calculated based on taking total distance travelled divide by litres pumped. No change in driving habits over last 3 tanks, after oil change.

Both engine oil differ very little in viscosities and viscosity index. Did you check your engine oil level before and after the oil change?

The oil level could be at the halfway mark before the oil change or the mechanic could have overserved the new oil.

Not true. Like I said. One can be at top band and the other at lower band. Go read bobistheoilguy.

30wt oil can be cst 9.3-12.5

That what's I trying to drive at. Both oil are actually quite low in the band!

Viscosity, @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D445)/ Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D445)/Viscosity Index

Mobil 1 62.6 / 11.8 / 187

Castrol 70 / 12.1 / 173

There are some oil like Castrol 0W30 (German Castrol) which falls in a viscosity band which is very close to a 0W40 (Mobil 1) oil just as an example.
