First and foremost , congrats to TS . Please make use of your windfall wisely .

For some people , the slogan is

" You never really own a Patek Phillipe , you merely take care of it for the next generation . "

For TS , his grandparents never really owned a bungalow , they merely take care of it for their grandchildren .  [:p]

MCF not only the people buy car pay full cash , on top of that still got inheritance . No wonder EDMW hates us .

If u mix business with friendship, u will either lose money or lose a friend

Often you will lose both! Stay away from F&B in Singapore. Statistically more than 50 percent chance will fail within 2 to 3 years.

Singapore has alot of dividend paying counters, can consider investing in those and diversifying over REITS, Bond ETF's, Blue chip dividend counters. Chuck in there and keep reinvesting the dividends when its time to hang up the work socks should have tidy sum for world trips :)

Honestly I dunno if the chips will keep on falling for Singapore.

I buy a US dollar denominated ishares World index fund on LSE for this purpose. Short of buying property in a foreign country, I think its the easiest way not to keep every egg in the sg basket.

Not to mention that sgx has lagged the global stock market gains for number of years already.

Even established chains also has hits and misses. A nearby mall, even some mid sized chain outlets also closed after lease is up.

happened to me before I went to NS.

great x* grandfather's estate was sold off back in origin land. I got a 5 figure sum that was due to my mum who had passed on earlier. all $$$ gone before I finished my NS. Now, 20 years on, I wished that the money had come to me much later in life. (like right now!) anyway, the things I did with the money, the experiences and such shaped and made me who I am now.

so my advise to TS...share the joy with your wife. buy for her something she really likes and gain her approval for your decisions on how to spend the money. back then, everyone in my family got the dough, so I shared with friends. money can really buy you friends :)

Was also thinking of putting some money into F&B. Have a current naval chef fren. He thinking of quitting the navy and setup a tze char stall. I know nuts about it. But maybe can help him realise his dreams and me having a passive income becoming a silent shareholder.

Like that can?

bro, inheritance is one thing (go thru the motion and receive your portion first)

Setting up or j/v biz is another.  dont rush with this yet until you are very sure of few things

ensure biz model is do-able

projection of biz revenues over costs overheads

ever ready to make improvements/changes over time or change of competitive environment

you must put effort and time on it. (dont leave everything to your partner/s and sleep on biz)

i know..cos i am "come over person" 过来人

Dining for free at your own shop is one of the worst mistake to make.

Please do not do that.

It sets a very poor example for the employees when the owner does not respect his own business

If dont dine in own shop, how to know if food is up to standard? Then employees will think that even the boss also dont eat in his own shop.

Same like my company. We own an airline but all management staff dont fly in our own airline. SQ is the preferred choice.

Can meh? Head office never enforce dog fooding?

And how can CX lose out to SIA?

Its like that here. Gona change big boss end of the year and he is also former from that airline company. The last two were also from that airline company.

You can imagine the huge saving we can save if we use only our own airline. We fly 3,000+ sea staff around the world to join ships or send them home. But we dont use our own airline. We use the competitors airlines.
