Actually, I got an email from HSBC last month saying their Multi-Currency Account here will be changed, as of today - now called Everyday Global Account. There should be a new debit card issued that allows transactions in curriencies within the MCA but if you don't have that currency then will be transacted as normal in SGD.

The difference is likely to be their charges will revert back to standard bank charge if you don't have funds in the currency of the transaction.

ATM fees etc. worldwide are supposed to be free (but I need to check/confirm yet) if you are using a currency from the account;

Australian Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen, New Zealand Dollar, Pound Sterling, Swiss Franc, US Dollar, Hong Kong Dollar and Chinese renminbi

During my recent trip to HK, I pre-exchange some HKD and stored in my YouTrip e-wallet.   I don’t encounter any problems using my YouTrip Card in places like departmental store, and those established restaurants.  However, taxi and those small eateries accept only cash payments, so I have no choice but to go to a DBS ATM to withdraw 1000HKD, as HKD is one of the 10 currencies stored in the YouTrip Card, a fee of HKD28.60 (S$5.00) was charged.  As such, a total amount of HKD1028.60 was deducted from my HKD stored in the e-wallet. Other than this fee of HKD 28.60, there was no other fee paid by me. So to speak, there is no ATM fee charged for the cash withdrawal using the YouTrip Master Debit Card.

I think you've kinda contradicted yourself there, there is a S$5.00 ATM Withdrawal Fee but this is irrespective of the amount taken out. So, for a HK$1000 withdrawal the fee is S$5.00 equivalent and for a HK$10,000 withdrawal, the fee is the same S$5.00 equivalent. The more money withdrawn, the closer to 0% comes the fee.

Please read the following FAQ from YouTrip:-

Is there any withdrawal charge?

Yes, there is a SGD5 or equivalent withdrawal fee for each overseas ATM withdrawal.

For ATM withdrawal in any of the 10 currencies that stored in your multi-currency wallet (SGD, USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, HKD, AUD, NZD, CHF, and SEK), the fee of SGD5 will be charged in the equivalent transaction currency using our wholesale exchange rate.

For ATM withdrawal in all other supported foreign currencies, the fee of SGD5 will be charged in SGD currency. Similar to any purchase transaction, ATM withdrawal in these currencies will be converted and deducted in SGD by default and followed by SmartExchange where applicable.

Please also take note that additional charges may be applied by overseas local bank for ATM withdrawal.

What I am saying is I was charged HKD 28.60 (equivalent of S$5) by YouTrip for the ATM withdrawal overseas. And there was no additional charges from the local bank (in my case the DBS HK) for my ATM withdrawal. And for your info, the max ATM withdrawal in HK is HKD1,000 per withdrawal. I was rejected when I tried withdrawing 1500.

The withdrawal amount from a HK ATM (or any country) is set by both your card and general ATM limits set by country/bank. I know for a fact HKD20k can be taken from a HK machine because I've done it, and some HSBC accounts/cards allow for withdrawals of up to HKD80k so the limits are dependant on more than one factor. A general HKD1k limit is too low - let's face it, that's only ~S$175 so your case was caused by a different reason than just ATM limit.

With regards fees, so long as you are withdrawing one of the currencies stored in your wallet, I don't believe overseas local banks have a reason for adding their own fee. If you are withdrawing a currency outside of the ten, then yes is more likely/possible.

i had very bad experience with youtrip during 20th -23rd dec......virtually every transaction failed to go through.....whichever merchant in shanghai disneyland swipe my card, it fails.....all bank atm teller also rejects this card then for money withdrawal...

support for this card is virtually non existent.  it only replied via email 20.5 days after my complaint... it didn't even realised the numberous unsuccessful transactions i suffered....i think we must always have backup options and not rely on youtrip only.

heard uob mightyfx and cimb got something similar......anyone tried before?

A quick look at Mightyfx, it is a debit card with similar feature but seem like only limit to 11 currencies. Also you need to convert to the respective currency for the transaction. Unlike YouTrip that you can always leave it in SGD and convert on each transaction needed.

i only get to use it once in Singapore and about 10 transactions in Thailand (no issue), going to use it in Taiwan this weekend.

Online also no problem even for refund in USD, as the card is issue by Ezlink, i also use it as my ezlink card  [laugh]  [laugh]

I have problems even using my Union Pay Card issued by BOC in SG at many sales outlets in China, let alone credit/debit card issued by foreign bank. During my recent trip to Shenzhen and Guangzhuo, I didn’t bring a single cent of RMB cash with me and was using WeChat Pay all the way, including payment for Taxi fare and buying MRT tickets.

You need to register the card here https://abt.transitlink.com.sg/ as an ezlink card.

my union card has never failed so far and was the fallback for me during the youtrip outage during my last trip to china.  otherwise, i would have been stranded c**k standing....because i didn't bring any rmb currency notes with me.

i wanted to link to wechat pay, but it needed a china phone number to do so.....it also doesn't link to credit card, so that option is out for me.

i see....thanks!  since got another outlet to use it, maybe i will not write off this card yet for future trips, but must have backup options.......

during the outage i experienced in late dec, i was worried my deposited monies about S$17** have no outlet to use....
