Environmental friendly or over done?

Just to be contrarian here for sake of discussion.

Rafia strings also not biodegradable. The amt of plastic used for the strings might be very close to that of straws.

The washing of the cans after each use, the amount of water and detergent used cannot be good for water conservation and environmental efforts too.

The number of injuries from the jagged sharp metal lids will improve the economy for sure when the users have see the doctors for stitches.

Go back to the good 'ol days at least the tin can can be recycled and not harmful to the enviro too

Singapore really scores top in plastics use , really when compared to US or for that fact even India (even though they still have to go a long way of not littering) ; Even in restaurants  here they give water in  disposable cups, plates and even when they serve chilli paste they give it in so small like 1inch diameter plates..... aiyoh so flimsy

Restaurants / Hawker Centres cant get workers no more......

Where to draw the line.........          ????

Our lives are becoming like plastic disposables too

....... and China does not want to import waste products like paper/plastics and E-waste no more too;  I guess others will follow suit too

All the major super markets like ShengShiong, NTUC, Giant........ not even forgetting Mustafa too....... [laugh]

i found that Mustafa's bags are the huge- est

End of the day, I feel the sustainable way to go forward is the slow arduous process of public education to use what you need and to reuse/recycle when economically and environmentally feasible.

I just went to the beach at ecp on Sunday. Really lot of Styrofoam and plastic things floating in the sea and beach. That was after a cleanup event done at the same part of ecp.

I told my kids "that's rubbish". Unfortunately there's more rubbish than real organic things to show them.

I think plastics are great but we really overconsume them. But I think tetrapaks also take a lot of energy to break down.

I bring my own chopsticks and reusable containers to eat my salads. Only sometimes eat oily food or soups then throw away the containers.

Plastic bags I have too many (I always forget to bring my own bag cos I go ntuc after I finished work) but sometimes ask the cashier use less plastic bags also doesn't work lol. Think I will get a big IKEA bag to bring next time.

Look like Chinaman but longer lasting than those fibre like reusable bags who tend to tear.

lotte mart only give you carton boxes to pack, no plastic bags of any kind at all.  [laugh]  [laugh]  [laugh]

Actually the Ikea cafe also stop dishing out straws for a while but now the straws are back.

Although stop serving straw and plastic stuff is good for the environment you cannot just say stop suddenly. Maybe a gradual change and not a sudden deprivation. It will more or less affect business and ppl will think twice about patronizing kfc. Ppl are used to the convenience and when life is made difficult in the name of the environment some ppl will stop patronizing.

That is not proper dispose of rubbish. It should be collected, shredded, compacted and buried deep and away or recycled. This is simply littering.

Was watching NGC on Jackie Chan's effort of making plastic disposable into building tiles for wall or floor. They collect the plastic rubbish from Himalaya, wash it, shred it, heat it and melt it into plastic tiles in the oven. The whole process was done on the spot in a lorry, powered by solar.

Plastic is recyclable one.

Plastic is recyclable one.

firstly, to buried all these plastic rubbish, someone heading  a country with extra useless land big enough must be willing to let others dump in his country. which country do you think will agree?

The rate of decompose have to be faster than the rate of buried, this is by itself a big challenge.

recycle plastics are limited to areas of use, first out of the list is food rated plastic products, which make up a big buck of plastics used. it is also tough to control the QC and quality of the end product because the source is usually unstable. Recycle plastic products are also not as strong as the original because of the cutting and melting process it has to go through again.

working on recycle plastic is not as simple and easy as it all seem to us.  [laugh]  [laugh]  [laugh]

Twincharged

What you mean Giant give out the most plastic bags? I find NTUC also give out many plastic bags lo.

Giant gives the most ... then SS, then NTUC.

but the cashiers/packers are sometimes just doing their job ... coz part of the req is not to overpack for the weight and also prevent cross contamination of foods.

ya quite true.

u dun pass as law no 1 will automatic 1,

these stuff too hard to get through by education ,

esp our education method [nosebleed]

just look at the tray return lesson at the food courts ... long way to go.
