This thread served to provide a central reference for vehicle recall issued by automotive manufacturer.

 

For a start, I will start with something light (but still along the line hor).

 

 

Case #1: Lamborghini Centenario

It doesn’t matter how rare or expensive your car is, there is always a chance it could be recalled.
 
The Lamborghini Centenario was developed to pay homage to the 100th birthday of Lamborghini’s founder. It’s based on the Aventador and is powered by a naturally aspirated V12 engine, generating 770 horsepower. Only 40 units total are out in the wild – 20 coupes and 20 roadsters – and apparently at least 11 of them are in the U.S.
 
The 2017 Lamborghini Centenario is being recalled due to an incorrect certification label, which may have an incorrect weight limit. This could cause the vehicles to potentially be overloaded, increasing the risk of suspension or tire failure, which could increase the risk of a crash. A total of 11 units are affected by the recall, which includes both the Centenario coupe and roadster models.
 
The Italian automaker will begin notifying owners on how to get the correct label fitted to their exotic.
 
Err... how much could one possibly overload a 2 seater sport car? Come on, no 1 owner will likely be using it to say transport heavy items, of for the matter of fact, use it as a cargo mover, so how can it get overloaded to the extend of having it suspension damaged?? [confused]  [confused]  Well, I guess that is a high SES question that low SES people like me cannot foresee.

Amid a seemingly endless run of multimillion-vehicle recalls by volume carmakers, Rolls-Royce looks to have joined an elite group for making one of the smallest.
 
The British-based luxury carmaker was forced to issue a safety recall notice in the US because of a problem with the side-impact airbags on the 2015 model of its best-selling Rolls-Royce Ghost. The number of cars affected — one.
 
The company, which is owned by Germany’s BMW, told the Financial Times that the issue “was due to the incorrect labelling on one of the airbags” that had been identified during the customer pre-delivery check by Rolls-Royce.
 
The company added that at no point was there any question of a safety risk. “It is a good way of demonstrating Rolls-Royce’s attention to detail,” it said.
 
The carmaker, which sold a little more than 4,000 vehicles last year, said the car with the fault had left its factory in Goodwood, West Sussex, in January 2014 but its North American owner had not yet taken delivery.
 
“The affected vehicle has thorax air bags fitted to both front seats that may fail to meet the side impact performance requirements for the front seat occupants,” according to the recall notice, issued by BMW North America, through the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
 
Rolls-Royce did not confirm which company supplied the airbags.
 
Although the NHTSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment, subsequent data provided by the agency confirmed that among carmakers a single vehicle recall is rare.
 

It is label again... Now, since the recall involved only 1 car, and that car was not even delivered to the customer, is there a need to issue a statement of recall for it? It is more for marketing purpose if you ask me, or maybe again, a high SES problem... ... [:p]  [:p]

 

 

OK, back to the topic, and on a more serious note, here are some information relating to vehicle recall, which was posted on onemotoring.com.sg

 

At a glance

- When a vehicle is recalled, motor dealers/ importers are required to notify LTA and the owners of affected vehicles.

 

- Your motor dealer/ importer will then arrange for rectification works, if your vehicle is affected.
 
- With the Electronic Vehicle Recall System (EVRS) you can now check the details of the recalls, and determine if your vehicle is affected.
 
Understanding vehicle recall
Your vehicle may be recalled if the manufacturer finds defects that need to be rectified. Your motor dealer or importer is responsible for informing you as well as LTA.
 
They must also make arrangements to rectify the affected vehicles.
 
If your vehicle is affected, your motor dealer or importer will notify and arrange rectification works directly with you. Check with your motor dealer for the latest information on vehicle recall. 
 
Electronic Vehicle Recall System (EVRS)
When LTA is notified by a motor dealer or importer about any vehicle recall, the information is updated into the Electronic Vehicle Recall System (EVRS).
 
With the EVRS, you can check:
- If your vehicle is recalled (Enquiry on Vehicle Recall - Vehicle Specific)
- The list of vehicles being recalled (Enquiry on Vehicle Recall - Submitted for Last 6 Months)
- The status of rectification works for your recalled vehicle (Enquiry on Vehicle Recall - Vehicle Specific)

This one look like a new type of hearse...

 

As for luggage, anything that can be squeezed into the car and it smallish boot should not be overloading the suspension, unless the owner carry full car load of gold bar!!

 

BTW, IF I am the owner of the affected car under the recall, I would not want to have the wrong label change as:

 

- the sport car will be no longer be in its original condition;

- maybe car with wrong label can fetch higher price in future (just like note with printing defects are collector item)

 

I admit I am just dreaming, cos I can't even afford 1 tyre of the Centenario ... :D :D :D

Porsche In New Dieselgate Recall Affecting 60,000 Cars

Porsche has been ordered to recall 60,000 diesel-engined Cayenne and Macan SUVs over emissions irregularities.

The latest development, reported by news agency Reuters, comes after Germany’s transport ministry, the KBA, discovered that Porsche cars equipped with the latest Euro 6 diesel engines were fitted with the infamous cheat devices that help the cars get round strict laboratory test conditions.

Porsche has yet to comment on the latest recall. It follows a similar recall from the German sports car maker, which saw it recalling six-cylinder Macan SUVs to update emission-control software in a bid to avoid a regulatory sales ban.

There had been speculation earlier this year that Porsche – which gets its diesel engines from Volkswagen Group stablemate Audi – could ditch diesel entirely after dropping its remaining diesel engines from sale. Those rumors proved to be false, with the company's sales chief Detlev von Platen telling an industry newspaper back in March that the company remained committed to diesels in the future. 

"We're not saying that we are exiting [diesel]," von Platen told Automotive News Europe. "Presently, the planning process foresees one for the Cayenne and probably for the Macan, too. For the SUV models, it makes sense where customers want range and torque."

What's more, Porsche has said that it would prefer environmentally friendly gasoline and diesels to be used in its cars in the future.

"Sustainably produced fuels are a quick way to cut CO2 emissions from a company's existing fleet," Jörg Kerner, Porsche’s head of powertrain development said. "Future stages of development will produce specially designed engines that are can harness the full potential of these fuels in terms of optimized emissions, CO2 and performance. In combination with plug-in technology, this will deliver a driving experience typical of Porsche while at the same time ticking every environmental box."

OK, this is something on a more serious note. WHY should you be mindful of a recall, and take It seriously!

Mary didn’t know anything was wrong with her old Ford SUV when it was loaded onto a container ship in Europe in mid-2015. But she found out the hard way when it caught fire below deck, taking $45 million worth of other cars with it, causing another $55 million in damage to the vessel and its cargo, and sparking a legal fight between two car companies and the U.S. Department of Justice that remains ongoing.

 

Mary, who was shipping her car to Belgium as part of a relocation—wasn’t aware of the 10 recall notices that went out for the Escape, including two defects that had the potential to start a fire while it was off, according to legal filings and a 2017 summary of an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. 

 

“Brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder reservoir cap had been reported to enter the vehicles’ automatic braking system (ABS) wiring harness electrical connectors, causing short-circuits, melting, and fires,” the NTSB reported. By 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration knew of at least 260 vehicles that experienced a non-crash related fire.

 

“This would appear to be a perfect example of why it’s so important to get recalls fixed,”said Jason Levine, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety. “And a really good example of the need for electronic notification of recalls.”

i'm interested to find for PI cars, how are recalls done?

especially since some of the Models imported could be only less than 5 pcs here.

 

Those with the PI still around, will the PI still help?

those with PIs no longer around, how ah?

 

I understand that PI cars are normally linked to some insurance company for warranty coverage and link to some 3rd party workshop.

 

For cars that are not covered by the brands' global warranty, how to check if it is listed as a recalled vehicle (same make/model) in the country of origin?

 

For UK cars, can find their information from their UK vehicle recall registry,

For Jap cars, they have have a similar agency but how to check?

4,846,885 Vehicles: Fiat Chrysler Launches Massive Recall to Prevent Runaway Cruise Control

In terms of size, this recall is one of the largest from a single manufacturer in recent memory. And the problem it’s designed to fix once served as the plot of a 1990s TV movie I can’t recall the name of.

While there’s only one known incident on its radar, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has decided to go ahead with a recall of over 4.8 million Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles to prevent them from getting stuck in cruise control.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a fault exists in several newer models that could prevent the driver from disengaging cruise control. The dangers associated with this are obvious.

In its summary, the agency writes:

If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle’s wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

Expected to begin on July 6th, the recall covers many models. They include the 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger, and Durango, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2014-2018 Chrysler 300, 2014-2017 Chrysler 200, 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica, 2014-2018 Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, 2018 Jeep Wrangler, 2014-2018 Ram 1500, the next-generation 2019 Ram 1500, and 2014-2018 Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks, in both regular guise and chassis cab varieties.

According to FCA, in October of 2017, “Powertrain Engineering recorded a test observation regarding the inability to cancel cruise control when the CAN-C bus was fully disabled (no communication among any control modules, indicated by a U0001 diagnostic code).”

That same month, the team alerted the automaker’s U.S. Vehicle Safety and Regulatory Compliance office to the issue, sparking a two-pronged investigation. Only one real-world incident matches the description of the test. The incident, which occurred earlier this year, involved a 2017 Dodge Journey operated by the Avis rental agency. (The driver was not hurt and contacted the NHTSA on March 2nd.)

FCA purchased the Avis vehicle in April following conversations with the driver and the federal road safety agency. Apparently, a nest of rodents was found in the vehicle during teardown, but the chewed-up wiring “could not have caused the CAN-C bus to stop communicating.” While the automaker was able to replicate the fault in a test vehicle by severing CAN-C bus communications at the engine control module connector, investigations continue into the cause of the runaway cruise control.

The identified models all contain “a modified fault handling strategy in the Engine
Control Module (“ECM”) or Powertrain Control Module (“PCM”) software” that only affects vehicles from the 2014 model year or newer, thus, that’s where the recall begins. All recalled vehicles will have their software analyzed, with a flash performed on the engine or powertrain control module.

The automaker advises anyone who experiences the issue to “firmly and steadily” apply the brakes, shift into neutral, pull off to the side of the road, and place the vehicle in park. “Once placed in neutral or park, some of the vehicles will cancel cruise control when the engine hits a certain high-rpm threshold,” FCA noted.

Until the computer flash is performed, FCA advises owners of affected vehicle to refrain from using cruise control. This could mean a tired right foot for many motorists this weekend.

That was what made the case super complicated. Although she is theoretical at fault for not following the recall instructions (to have her SUV fixed), but if she has valid proof to show that she did not receive the recall notices, then the onus is now on the manufacturer, Ford.

 

Think about it, if the product a manufacturer is selling has risk of catching fire, or for the matter of fact, any risk that could potentially resulted in serious accident / injury / fatality, the manufacturer have the duty and obligation to reach out to the customers and get it fixed ASAP, through all available means, and that is my view on the topic.

In big countries, cars might be exchanged with many hands that it's hard to track down the ultimate ownership from the first owner.

After latest death, vehicles with faulty Takata airbags banned from renewing road tax

 

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — Authorities will not renew the road tax of any vehicle involved in a global recall of Takata-made airbags that have killed at least 23 people worldwide unless owners show they have replaced these, said Anthony Loke.
 
The transport minister said the directive will take effect on Monday, adding that the drastic move was needed to prevent further deaths caused by the defective airbags.
 
Honda Malaysia confirmed the airbag inflators ruptured in a Honda City driven by Pong Hou Tien, 23, who was killed in the May 27 crash. His death brought the death toll in Malaysia to seven.
 
For Malaysia alone there are 71,315 Honda vehicles that have yet to replace their airbags and that makes up about 20 per cent of the entire fleet recalled since 2014,” he said after meeting the victim's family at their home in Cheras today.
 
Last Sunday, Pong was believed to have been killed after his Honda City's front passenger side airbag deployed and ejected a two centimetre long rusted metal shard that pierced his neck at high speed following a car crash in Taman Len Seng around 5.30am, bringing the death toll involved to two this year.
 
In February, a man died after he was struck by shrapnel from an exploded driver's airbag inflator of his 2004 Honda City model following an accident in Selangor. The model was included in the mandatory recall announcement.
 
Loke said owners of affected vehicles may now only renew their roadtax manually at RTD offices and online renewals will be blocked.
 
“If they want to complain about me making their lives troublesome by having to go through a tedious process, let them do so.
 
“I would rather be complained at than visit another victim of an accident that could have been avoided in the first place,” he said.
 
Loke is also considering publishing the registration numbers of all owners who do not comply with the recall, but said discussions will be made with the respective car manufacturers first.
 
He criticised owners for ignoring the repeated recalls over the issue that emerged four years ago and was extensively covered by the press.
 
“I am not going to pinpoint anyone but we are here to find solutions,” he said, adding that manufacturers have done their to notify and remind customers of the recall.
 
In a statement, Honda Malaysia said Pong’s 2004 Honda City was listed in a 2015 recall, but was never sent in for repairs.
 
Supporting Honda's claim, Loke said 28 notice letters were sent to the victim's old address based on RTD records, with the latest delivered six days before the incident.
 
Loke also said the victim had not updated his address during the ownership transfer.
 
“We do not want the owners to wait until they are unable to renew their roadtax take necessary actions because this problem has been proven worldwide and there are statistics to back it up.
 
“Vehicle owners must also take responsibilities for the sake of their safety to spend some time getting their vehicles checked and if they passed inspection, then take it as a routine service and if replacement is required then at least they are aware of the dangers now,” he said.

very informative post - didin't know so serios.

i received a recall notice from ad to go for check in May18 - did the check on 1Jun18. They replaced something. when i remarked to the SA lucky it didn't activate while driving, he just gave a blank look. they are very pro handling such remarks. <_<

I am glad you find the info useful, AND have already attended to the recall to get the defects rectified. [thumbsup]

 

Sad to say that the so call safety system in Singapore are many a time, merely lip services, as how to maintain the highest safety level if the general public are not fully aware of the rational behind the rules and regulations set, or with the lack of enforcement by the relevant authorities? [hur]  

 

Severity of say the airbag defect has never made it to the headline on MSM here, as the space are reserved for publicizing how reliable are our train getting, how CareShield Life is going to help 50% of the population who could become disabled at 65, the possibility of a PM without degree... ... [furious]

 

Take this Takada airbag recall for example, since the recalls were first initiated in Singapore in 2013, all LTA did was to

- get motor dealers and parallel importers to notify LTA and affected vehicle owners, and make necessary arrangements to rectify the defects and update LTA on the progress of the rectification works

- publish a media statement, and continue to monitor the situation

 

So what to do with those that did not response to the recall? Let them be and if they die their business? Why are we not pushing through with enforcement, such as disallowing those who did not get the defects rectified to renew their road tax? [speechless]

 

I think some of the reader here might find that I am over reacting to the incident, and let me tell you why I think I am not. The defective airbag might not just kill the driver and/or it passenger(s), but if the accident vehicle get out of control, it might hit other vehicle(s) and pedestrian, thereby getting more people injured or killed. And let not forget some of these affected vehicles might also be used as PHV, thus it is NOT just that the owners are at risk, but the commuters, like us, our family, our friends, etc. etc. [shakehead]

So what to do with those that did not response to the recall? Let them be and if they die their business? Why are we not pushing through with enforcement, such as disallowing those who did not get the defects rectified to renew their road tax? [speechless]

 

I think some of the reader here might find that I am over reacting to the incident, and let me tell you why I think I am not. The defective airbag might not just kill the driver and/or it passenger(s), but if the accident vehicle get out of control, it might hit other vehicle(s) and pedestrian, thereby getting more people injured or killed. And let not forget some of these affected vehicles might also be used as PHV, thus it is NOT just that the owners are at risk, but the commuters, like us, our family, our friends, etc. etc. [shakehead] 

 

These are not even news, but lies.  [rolleyes]
