 Sumo in uproar as women first responders ordered out of ring  

 

TOKYO (AP) — The head of Japan's sumo association has apologized over an incident in which women first responders were asked to get out of the ring as they attempted to revive an official who collapsed.

 

In sumo's tradition, the ring is considered sacred and women are prohibited from entering.

 

That posed a problem Wednesday when Ryozo Tatami, the 67-year-old mayor of Maizuru in northern Kyoto, collapsed during a ring-top speech. Two women, apparently medical experts, rushed in and started performing first aid as several male sumo officials surrounding the mayor looked on.

 

When two more women rose to the ring trying to join the first aid effort, announcements demanded the women get out of the ring.

 

"Ladies, please get off the ring," a sumo referee said, determinedly. "Only gentlemen go up."

 

Footage posted on social media triggered outrage, with many criticizing sumo officials and saying they were choosing tradition over life.

 

 

 

The incident reminded me of the weird regulations that Woman were not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia (it was lifted only late of last year). Imagine in a life threaten situation, and only with women, and yet they (whom know how to drive - maybe got their driving license overseas) are not allowed to drive the victim to seek further medical treatment? Life is less important??

Just to put things in perspective, what the ref said is valid.

Unless there was no other male first-aiders, then it would be foolish not to allow the females into the ring but I'm sure they would've thought of that if they wanted to keep to tradition.

Sumo chief sorry after women attempting CPR ordered out of ring

 

The head of Japan's sumo association has apologised after women attempting to perform CPR during a medical emergency Wednesday were repeatedly asked to leave a sumo ring.

 

At least two women rushed into the ring in Maizuru, northwest of Kyoto, after a local mayor collapsed while giving a speech.

 

But as the women attempted to help the mayor, multiple announcements were made over loudspeakers asking them to leave the ring, city official Noriko Miwa told AFP.

 

The rings where sumo is practised, known as sumo dohyo, are seen as sacred places in the native Shinto faith.

 

Women, who are considered to be "ritually unclean", are barred from stepping into them.

 

According to witnesses cited by local media, sumo officials threw large quantities of salt into the ring after the women had entered, in an apparent bid to "re-purify" the sacred ground.

 

In a statement, the sumo association's chief, who goes by the name Hakkaku, described the announcements as "inappropriate" under the circumstances.

 

"The announcement was made by a referee who was upset, but it was an inappropriate act in a situation that involves one's life. We deeply apologise," Hakkaku said.

 

"We pray from the bottom of our heart for safety of the mayor, and express our deep gratitude towards women who offered emergency measures on the spot," added the sumo chief.

 

Miwa said the mayor had been hospitalised and was now in a stable condition.

 

 

 

From the full video above, we can see that those (males) on the stage are appearantly helpless and just crowd around the victim . It was the 1st woman, who started to perform CPR on the fainted mayor, within seconds of stepping into the ring.    

 

The very 1st male first responder (carrying a small red 1st aid grab pack) only enter the ring after 45 seconds, just when another 2 woman steps into the ring trying to assist, while a proper 1st aid kit were only brought into the ring at the 75 sec mark.

 

For the benefit of doubts, Kudos to the ladies for rending their assistance.     To be fair, 45 sec is not a short period of time, from medical point of view, and it can be crucial to the survival of some victim.
