Jamesc Hypersonic February 11, 2018 Share February 11, 2018 They have to switch their strategy to cater to current trends. From private motorists to drivers of PHV From regular servicing to accident repair business. Every day on the highway got car accident and just from the reckless drivers thread can see so many accidents.

Shibadog Turbocharged February 12, 2018 Share February 12, 2018 (edited) servicing used to be 100% done in SG (not with AD) over time, some of the senior mechanics at my regular workshops went back to Msia (johor) to open their own workshop. Unfortunately they were replaced by new mechanics with limited knowledge and dodgy skills (seen/experienced incidents personally) So, rather than risking these new guys, I sometimes prefer to make the trip to Johor to service the car at the workshops run by the seniors. Best part is, these guys are very hands-on at their own workshops. Cost-wise, for sure cheaper than SG but that savings is negated by the increase in toll fees (which has since reduced LOL) and time. Most impt is the peace of mind that the person doing the service is experienced and no shoddy work. tyre purchase always done in SG. alignment - sometimes SG, sometimes Johor, sometimes KL. But I hv preferred shops in each of these locations. I may be wrong, but I think there's a side effect of Uber/Grab going into rental business. Their large fleet of rental cars still require maintenance, changing tyres, batteries, and general servicing. However, these businesses does not go to the regular workshop on the streets. It's negotiated with certain workshops and bcuz the qty of service is huge, the price is pushed down very low. Example, they may earn $5 for each oil change compared to a regular workshop making $50 So these businesses has been changed from retail-like to more distributor-like kind of pricing. When these rental cars need a battery or tyre change, it goes through those workshops, being pressed down on pricing. So it would appear that many car workshops will suffer, if they are out of the circle and not doing something special or niche business. agreed. And the requirements for private owners servicing their cars is probably a bit different from PHV rentals. Basically it becomes like fleet management. kobayashiGT Internal Moderator February 13, 2018 Author Share February 13, 2018 WOAH. You do a chart for me? Hi kobayashiGT, refer to the bar chart which compares the number of cars used to be serviced by third party workshop in 2014 vs end 2017. The x-axis represent car age and y-axis represent qty. The blue bars represent scenario in 2014, whereas the orange bars represent data as of end 2017. One can clearly see a huge amount of "old" cars have "disappeared" because they have now become new cars and are serviced by the respective agents. the population has been shifted to orange bars in 1,2,and 3 years. This is in relative terms, it is one of the reasons the workshops are experiencing a drop in cars being serviced by them.
