Keen on the Octavia 1.4 but worried about the reliability of the 7 speed dry DSG. Skoda claimed this had been overcome and there are no negative feedback to date. Appreciate if current owners driving the Octavia 1.4 provide some feedback. Thanks in advance.

Talk is cheap. Ask for 10year warranty on gearbox.

If the worry is there, then the solution is not to get one. No point getting a car you constantly have to worry ending up waiting for a tow at the shoulder. Go for a trusty Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Honda, or Hyundai instead. Do not go for any VW group cars utilising a gearbox that strikes constant fear in your heart, because that is not the way to live and drive.

Thanks very much for the advice. Every car bound to have issues. I am just seeking clarification from fellow Octavia owners if what the the SA claim is true.

Well, no SA in his right mind will tell you lousy things about their brand and ask you to get another. Here is a list of the local vag cars that are using this gearbox. Audi A3, and Q2 models. Seat arona, ibiza, and leon models. VW golf, beetle, and polo. No point you go ask VW, because SCS under the same roof, both tact team and tell you the same thing. Go ask a PA SA and see what they say, got time go Vertex do the same. If they all say good to go, but consumers say otherwise. What would you do?

I agree with you. No SEs will say bad things about the cars that they are selling. Just do some research on what you are buying. Sometimes things happen also you cannot stop it from happening. If you are happy with what you see and test drive, go ahead. Like me also have some worries about the DSG, but after some online research and assurance from my SE, I got a Karoq. Now waiting for my COE.

think after they change to DSG mineral oil (if its true) , alot less noise.

things to consider

1) style of driving. alot of expressway, alot of stop and go ( better dont get)

2) consistency of reliability

3) if you use 10 years? 2nd hand dealers will carrot you because of the dsg

4) new golf coming

Warranty doesn’t cover wear and tear la. It’s known that dct wears easier vs cvt so will spoil easier. Performance vs reliability has always been this way. Even Ferrari with all their high performance parts also many problems but no one complains about it. People treat this as any bnb car and complain of course mismatch in expectations all unhappy.

I have personally driven a 2013 Jetta, utilizing the infamous gearbox, 2014 thru to 2018.

Never had any issues, other than the MU warning me of impending failure in the last year, which I replaced to prevent myself needing a tow truck some fine day.

There are owners before, and after me, with more issues on ownership of the same car, or same gearbox.

Equal numbers for those before 2013, and after 2014.

Most of the feedback were with juddering at low speeds.

Mine had juddering too, but it is not bonebreakingly bad like what others described.

A colleague of mine had his MU replaced twice, and the entire gearbox once, all under VW warranty within the 5 years he owned the jetta(he gave up on the car after, but ended up with an A3 using the same gearbox).

So hor, if you ask me if the 7 speed dry DSG is reliable, I say yes.

Because juddering, nothing to do with reliability.

MU breakdown, time to buy 4D.

If you ask me to buy another VW group car with a DSG7, would I? I would.

But that is just my opinion.

Back then, many people bought with eyes wide opened and it's primarily because there are not many alternatives that gives an equally fun or spirited driving for the same budget.

I think now we have more choices with the likes of 1.5T civic, new i30, megane, astra, and some 1.2T cars.

my exec drive summary:

1   jetta 1.4t (round eyes one), love the dsg, don hv problems

2   qq 1.2 t, hate the cvt even though its turbo engine, totally miss dsg shiokness

3   now 1.4 kodiaq, back to shiokness

the pairing of engine and gb is paramount for driving shiokness....my take

Hmmm... How come I heard many cvt gearbox also piang.. Break?

Myself driving 2015 Jetta with no issues so far. ð Nowadays also very easy to repair. Parts are everywhere. For me I prefer the driving feel of the dsg compared to the mundane drive of the cvt.

Anyway to the prospective owner worried about the dsg, you can do your research like what other bros here say, it's mostly resolved and no issues thus far already. If your heart like the drive of the Octavia with the dsg, go with your heart. If problems really come, that's if, there will be 5 years or 100,000km warranty to cover. No regrets. ð

Eh just to check, isn't Harrier on CVT?

I think Harrier is on auto transmission.
