Lotr 6th Gear March 23, 2018 Share March 23, 2018 Wow this thread is moving fast. Given the cost of the superb L&k is 145k and selling price is 159k, I would say it is a good deal for those going for the top end spec. I was looking at the opel Insignia, the 1.5l is 152k and the 2l is about 182k, iirc. So for 7k more, can get superb L&k which has better spec than the 1.5l opel e.g. 2l engine, sunroof, ventilated seats etc. ↡ Advertisement
Lotr8445r 5th Gear March 23, 2018 Share March 23, 2018 Your info salah lah... The 2nd gen Superb was launch in 2009 with 1.8 TSI engine in 2 trim level, Ambition and Elegance. The car can be had for ~$90K (OMV $28K) & $100K (OMV $31K) respectively, when COE is ~$5K. The cheapest 2.0 TSI Elegnace is ~$150K+ (OMV $26K) when COE hit $80K mark, in 2012. You missed out on the OMV part and changes in vehicle taxes, which form a large part to the car pricing in Singapore. I will skip the detailed calculation but highlight how the chances co-relate to the current pricing. With the assumption that OMV for Superb L&K is ~$35K, Additonal vehicle tax (ARF, custom duty, SGT, etc.) = $9K x 2.284 = $20.5K Tiered ARF (140% for OMV of >$20K to $50K) = $15K x additional 40% = $6K VES Surcharge = $10K The cost (excluding COE) of Superb L&K increased by a whopping $36.5K vs the last 2.0 TSI, and if you put that into the equation, the cost of a 2.0 Superb would now be closer to $145K, no doubt it is still lower than Skoda listed price of $159K, but I guess that it where the over-trade part will come into play later (VW typically sell a car at a few $K lower than the listed price and will at time dish out non-official over-trade deal to attract sincere buyer). And let not forget, you are now getting the top of the range L&K edition, which used to retail for a $30K premium (over Elegance trim), when it is still under Harvest Auto. If you make reference to Skoda & VW pricing in Europe, it is quite the same as what we get here, i.e. Octavia for the pricing of Golf, or therebaout. And there is something I believe everyone posting here missed out. The pricing of Octavia & Rapid Spaceback is based on the latest VES scheme (taking into more emission parameters then current), effective 1st July 2018, where it will attract a $10K surcharge, vs current Golf with $0 surcharge, so do the sum again and the answer is crystal clear now, isn't it? If that is still not clear enough for some, the new VES (July 2018) is likely going to hit >80% of the B&B model sold here, suh as Elantra, K3, and even Altis, so by then, all B&B model will likely start from $100K and up, making the Octavia less expensive in real term. OK, lunch break for now. I will be back to touch on Kodiaq later. Stay tuned. That was about 10 years ago when i almost trade in my 3 yrs old car for Superb. I cant debate as i do not have that figure now. However, if their profit margin is merely 14k (159k-145k) now, i agreed with you.
Davidcks 1st Gear March 23, 2018 Share March 23, 2018 This thread is so interesting..... if the margin is really that as stated about 15k... would be a very good deal... also I looked at the brochure online and it seems the ambition and ambition plus would be coming soon.... think will have to drop by see this weekend.... Like everything about the superb L&k so far, except the 19" rims, too big which will be expensive when come to changing tyres and ride will be more firm. Carbon82 Moderator March 23, 2018 Author Share March 23, 2018 On the topic of Kodiaq spec and pricing, current the "apples" (4.7 - 4.8m 7 seater SUV) are Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi 4WD and the top of range Peugeot 5008 1.6 Allure. With both it competitors loading their car with full spec / feature, it will be logical for Skoda to do the same, to maintain it value for money proposition. I will let the cost breakdown chart do the talking. Oh, a slight correction to my earlier post about Superb pricing. What I meant is that with the increase in ARF, VES, etc., the new Superb L&K would be costing more (as in selling price) at ~$145K, in comparison to when they are sold by Harvest Auto, but the additonal profits would most likely be the buffer for further discount / over-trade or freebies. OK, for ease of reference, I have done up a chart, to compare it with the "apples", Passat 2.0 R-Line & Camry 2.0 (I have to say that 2.5L would be a better comparison with reference to performance and spec).
Beanoyip Turbocharged March 23, 2018 Share March 23, 2018 Just to put some context, I bought my Superb in 2006 for 90k, COE was about 13k back then... The mark up is definitely sky high..

The positioning of Skoda is interesting though. In Europe, pricing for Seat/Skoda/VW models is not that different when the specs are similar. How Seat and Skoda differentiate themselves in Europe is to have lower spec models available compared to the equivalent VW model, enabling them to sell at a lower price point. But in Singapore, the AD seems to have decided to come in with very high spec versions and sell it at close to the pricing of VW's equivalent. Not sure if they are bringing in the high spec at launch, or are they concerned that a low spec Skoda selling at a big discount to the equivalent VW model will cannibalise sales of VW.

This is closer to what a non premium brand pricing may be able to command imo. Ateca shares the MQB platform, so correct comparison shd be Karoq suv. Looks like they have brought in some higher end models like 2.0 versions of the superb and kodiaq resulting in higher prices, disappointing some who may be hoping for waiting for the 1.4 versions. end of the day need to compare apple to apple. of course Ateca 1.4 will be cheaper than Kodiaq 2.0. In addition to the engine size difference, I am sure quite a number of items will be different. fungyee77 5th Gear March 23, 2018 Share March 23, 2018 comparing A4 to superb is like comparing jetta to passat. Haha, Superb is definitely bigger in terms of the width (2031vs 1841) and boot space. But A4 has grown in size for this gen as well, such that its not exactly a coconut to orange comparison. I remember telling someone that Passat was much bigger than A4, and pulled out the dimensions to prove my point, only to find that the current gen A4 has a longer wheelbase (2820 vs 2791) and is wider (1842 vs 1832) than the Passat. So if the Passat is a usual comp to the Superb, the A4 should not be left out of the picture either - especially where the pricing is so similar.
Sdf4786k Twincharged March 23, 2018 Share March 23, 2018 comparing A4 to superb is like comparing Jetta to Passat.A4 is a different chassis to Passat. A4 is MLB platform and the engine is longitudinal. Passat and superb is on the MQB platform. But quality wise. The superb is way better if its on the larin and kremin spec. But tech toys on the passat like the virtual cockpit and the seat extender is missing from the skoda.

I was comparing the same; Passat vs A4 about 1 year ago. although the A4 wins on "paper", in actual butt feel, the Passat is definitely more spacious, especially in the back on leg room and shoulder room. therefore, I feel the comparison on this thread should be Passat vs the Superb... ↡ Advertisement
