Beggars can't be choosers lar... based on my situation, buying a new car was out of the question until the price soften lor... can say until the Octavia got tiger got dragon but at the end of the day, money rules... no money, no talk... so I buy based on my pocket... ↡ Advertisement

Lala81 Hypersonic February 5 Share February 5 On 2/2/2025 at 9:29 PM, teomingern said: The Octavia is $161,900; the Corolla Altis is $155,000. After bargaining only for the Skoda; there's effectively no bargaining possible for the Corolla Altis. Not actually in a rush but just trying to maximize the value of my current car... Right now the PARF value of my car is just $19,000 (1 Feb). Both Skoda and Borneo Motors willing to give me $4000 over that value for trade-in. That's significant. My car COE expires on 3 April 2026. If I wait past 3 Apr 2025, no AD will give me any value above the PARF. I had the sad experience with my Subaru Impreza before... can't even get $500 more for that car cos it was a month before its 9th birthday... So if I wait until early 2026 (before 03 Apr), my value would just be $12,000. So between now and then, the value of my car drops about $11,000. Right now the CAT A COE premium is $93,000 give or take a couple of thousand dollars... since Jan 2024, the COE has hovered around $85,000 to $103,000... given that the LTA is back-filling some COEs over the next 2-3 years, the COE will likely soften slowly over the year... I am not sure if I wait until early 2026, the COE will drop by over $11,000 or not... that's anybody's guess... If the COE premium softens slowly, I expect that changing car now is best value for me... if the COE plunges cos either economy is really bad or the COE backfills increases supply so much that demand can't keep up, then I actually lose lar... my view, I doubt the economy will plunge so badly or the supply of COEs will increase that much... effectively, there is also a significant pent-up demand... if the COE drops to $65,000, everyone will surge into buy cars... which is what happened over the last year as the COE premium fell drastically mysteriously... Finally, given the uncertainty around the COE trends, ADs will likely keep car prices up to maintain their margins for bidding as well as keeping the business on an even keel... so a $10,000 drop is COE may not be matched by a corresponding car price drop... So after thinking about it, on the balance it seemed best to maximize my car's value at this point... My thinking before this was to keep my car... renew the CAT B COE at around $100,000 - $110,000. This was the trend until the last huge jump to $121,000... since time left for my COE is short, it would mean that I would be badly impacted by unexpected jumps in CAT B COE premiums since I have to pay the PQP which averages 3 months... renewing the COE before the expiry date would mean losing more than just the PARF at the 10th year... therefore not good value to renew before the final year... which also puts me in a situation where I may be badly exposed to the above... On weighing all the above, and given the opportunity presented by Borneo Motors to buy a new car at a price that I could still stomach... albeit with some dieting required, I took it lor... only time will tell if this is the best decision but given the info I have now, I think it's the best for my circumstances lor... Your analysis may differ though... A Hyundai k3 and elantra can get around 3k at scrap now. So your sonata could be potentially in that range (not sure though). Anyway your rationale seems quite sound. The only thing I would say if there's any sorta mini flash dip, your options would be more though rather than the altis. Oh definitely... the COE just dropped to $85,000 for Cat A today... but would the ADs drop the price accordingly? The COE trend is still volatile...

Corolla Altis should give a peace of mind in long term run should one decided to drive it for 10 years. Yeah, it's boring, not fency in tech but some just like it for what it is and that's what make Toyota reliable.

The previous generation Superb so many asked for the wagon but didn't want to bring in due to low interest. Now with high COE, Skoda SG decided to bring it in. Kind of irony.

Power is addictive even in normal mode. I don't set it to sport mode for drive which is not necessary, just using the sport mode for steering so it is more heavy on the feel. ↡ Advertisement
