One of my favourite no-brainer places to go to for comfort food:

Kaiware Japanese Restaurant

http://kaiware.sg/

https://www.facebook.com/kaiware111/

Chef Peter Teo started Wasabi Tei at Far East Plaza. He was once known as the Nazi Chef for his bad attitude and penchant for throwing customers out of his then tiny shop. Queues for between 2 - 4hours were not uncommon. Customers learned to order once, eat quickly and quietly. The establishment was famous for its nabe and chirashi dons. His signature chirashi don featured chunks of "don't care" sashimi. He sold the shop and disappeared for a few years. Wasabi Tei is still in operation under a different management.

Chef Teo re-emerged onto the F&B scene again at Mitsuba at Jalan Sultan, closed it, reopened at Clarke Quay Central, closed it, reopened at TripleOne Somerset, closed it and is now at China Square Central. Through all the relocations, his fans followed him. He is no longer an angry, sulky chef.

The standard of his food has only dropped a little bit over these 15 years. Servings are still generous and usually fresh. There's value for money at this price point.

I realise Singaporeans love Japanese food more than other cuisines...  :D

Not only their food

some of us love their culture, ladies, movies, holidays there too.  [thumbsup]

:D

The Basil Inn, or Baan Krapow บ้าน กระเพรา

https://www.facebook.com/TheBasilInn/

1 Pasir Ris Close, #02-335 Downtown East E-avenue

Another hidden gem tucked away in eastern Singapore. The establishment was opened (as far as I know) by Singaporeans who have Thai family members. Cooks are native Thai.

Most dishes come with enough wok hei to satisfy cravings and standards are quite close to what you would get in Bangkok. Prices are on the slightly higher than average side for a suburban restaurant. Green curry worth trying, plenty of people get the fish and garlic pork is a must have for me. Thai iced tea is as good as it gets in Singapore.

Anyone got recommendation for chinese restaurant CNY set menu?

It's my dad's 70th birthday next year, so celebrating.

Budget <$900/table all in.

we usually go peach garden, so ruling that out this year. I'll check with kai garden.

Any other suggestions?

Looks good imo although I haven't try.

Can try Ban Heng too but must book now because the reservations will be full even before the new year starts.

If you stay in the east, Chin Lee at BLK 115 Bedok North is another suggestion.

I sometimes go there and eat while visiting an uncle who lives nearby the area.

Food is good, and price is pretty reasonable.

Have to book early too, as it gets crowded during weekends.
