INGAPORE - American ride-hailing giant Uber has said that it has fixed all 1,000 Honda Vezel cars affected by a flaw that could make them more prone to catching fire.

Uber spokesman Leigh Wong was responding to a Wall Street Journal report which said that Uber was aware that the cars were defective when it bought more than 1,000 defective Honda vehicles and leased them to drivers. The Journal said at least one car burst into flames in January.

Mr Wong told The Straits Times on Friday (Aug 4): "We can confirm that all affected Vezels have been fixed."

Private-hire drivers are like taxi-drivers, but they do not have to abide by many regulations governing cabbies.

Honda's authorised agent Kah Motor said this is why it imports only models which are deemed export-ready by Honda.

While its cars are also fitted with the stop-start feature, its flaw had been fixed before the vehicles left for Singapore. Hence they are not part of the recall campaign.

In Singapore, car dealers are allowed to carry on selling a model even though it is being recalled as long as the retailer takes steps to fix the flaw in a timely fashion.

Some parallel importers of the Vezel - the most popular unauthorised car here - have advised owners to deactivate the stop-start function while waiting for replacements for the defective part. That was what Uber recommended its drivers do.

In January this year (2017), an Uber Vezel burst into flames. The driver escaped injury, according to the Wall Street Journal,

The LTA is checking on the matter and was unable to verify the number of affected cars that have been fixed.

Or maybe not..

SINGAPORE - Only 9 per cent of Uber's fleet of defective Honda Vezel cars have been fixed, according to the Land Transport Authority's records, the agency said on Friday night (Aug 4).

This contradicts Uber's earlier claim that all its affected Vezels - which could catch fire - had been repaired.

The authority added that Uber had 1,200 of the affected cars, which were among some 11,000 Vezels imported here. Of the 11,000, 25 per cent have been rectified, an LTA spokesman said.

She said the figures were "based on last available information provided by importers and dealers".

Hmmm... Kah Motors came out to explain that they only bring in Honda-approved models... I think this kind of smacks of opportunism... a defect is a defect... probably affects the HR-V as well as the Vezel...

This one more or less summarises the support from PI. After more than 1 year, 91% of the Vezel not fixed. And this is still not reason enough for LTA to step in and stop the sales of recalled cars. Think must wait for some ppl to be BBQ then take action.

Hmmm Do we expect uber to ground all the vehicles that are not fixed yet? If so LTA might as well ground all the vehicles in Singapore that are not fixed yet due to being a fire hazard.

The pen is indeed mighty...

Vezel not honda approved models? anyway PI and AD not from same factory? Honda AD in this case bought in the HR-V much later after the Vezel came out, Honda might already identified the issue.

Hi guys, I'm planning to get a new honda vezel hybrid.

Mind to recommend reliable and trustable parallel importers?

Thanks.

Suggest that you go to the reputable ones. I had a bad experience with Xquisite Automobile so I wish that it doesn't happen to others in the community.

KM may be using the opportunity to take a dig at PIs, but what they say has truth in it. Fact is, when PIs export the car to SG, they take on the risk of forgoing Honda's support for the vehicle and take on the risk of providing support themselves. When the cost of support eats significantly into their profit margin, this is when the PI start to chut patterns. After all, who want to do a loss making business.

KM, on the other hand is able to pass back this liability to Honda and this process recalls are not a big problem to them

That's why some people are willing to pay more to get from Kah Motor.

Actually kah motor recently just revised their price for the HRV which is equivalent to the Vezel Petrol version.

I believe the price now is much more competitive towards PI

Yes. The prices are very close now.. better to get HR-V for peace of mind, warranty and servicing unless one really needs creative financing

WELL current HRVs aren't sold in hybrid versions. So the costs may be almost on par, but if one is willing to take some risks, the PI versions are better specced...

Caveat... I am not a PI nor a PI salesman/employee :)

The PI hybrid version is much cheaper because of the CEVS rebate. Which means you get almost nothing at the end. And you need to factor in battery costs. So do your sums first.

91% of Uber's Vezel not fixed.

Total 25% of Vezel rectified.

Mine's already done last year after pushing hard.
