Windscreen crack

Two weeks ago, coming back from ipoh on NSH, windscreen got hit by a stone near the IU area with a "big flower" crack.....

then yesterday, I was shock to see the long hairline crack appeared! maybe under the heavy rain of yesterday afternoon.

 

As my car got only 1 year to go, do I need to replace it? I mean will it have the tendency to shatter any time? My windscreen is pasted with solar film.

If your insurance cover windscreen, get it replaced asap.

The hairline will "grow"

 

Otherwise, try to get it repaired. Seek those specialist shops advice.

Consult Glassfix or another professional repairer. Many insurance policies allow for free repair of windshield (without loading or excess) even if an excess is charged for a replacement.

ok, I get that change since MSIG covers unlimited windscreen change, but I need to pay for the solar film and hopefully the radio antenna can be salvage as well.

I don't think you can repair it. Any small crack can be repaired using windshield repair kit but this kind of big crack! not possible. Just replace it.

Can I ask what could be the problem with my windscreen from the attached picture? Whenever light shines on the windscreen, there are lines streaks across the windscreen. I've replaced wipers, tried to clean and scrub the windscreen with windscreen cleaners, dishwashing liquid, baking soda and many other glass cleaners but doesn't solve the problem.

 

I have solar film installed but the lines streaks ONLY appears in the area where the wipers cover. So I presume it's not due to the solar film.

it could be due to the oxidize that cause this. have you try claybar your windscreen? see if helps?

those are scratch marks by very fine abrasive particles due to

 

- wear and tear

- operating the wipers dry

- park near to particle blasting area

For the last cause, what can I do to restore my windscreen?? I am parking in the open at work quite near to shipyards, when I use my wipers in the rain, there are streaks and the vision in front is quite blur. My car is only 1 year old. Please advise. Thank you

try using clay bar to see if it helps.

Probably will have the windscreen replaced if that's truly the case as no amount of cleaning will solve the problem.

I don't have first hand experience

 

technically it can be done by polishing with a harder compound like diamond paste but I am not sure if it is cost effective comparing to replacing a new windscreen

 

I quote what my neighbour said - don't bother lah, just use a hammer to crack the windscreen and replace a new one by claiming insurance.... not I say one hor..

Try glass fix @ Frontier. Bought a preowned car with a couple of shallow chips on side & dealer sent me there. Removed within mins.

But yours are in central area & quite extensive. Perhaps u call to see if they provide FOC assessment & quotation first.

 

Or check with your car insurance policy re windscreen replacement. If the excess isn't over $200, and no effect on your premium, better have it replaced.
