This thread seems to be for uncles (and aunties) like us... I enjoyed reading 老夫子 so much that I can forgo watching nice movies during CNY gathering at relative's place during my younger days. And reading his comic is just like watching Charlie Chaplin and Mr. Bean, you will laugh out from the heart.

Sad to hear about his passing. A great man of his own. [thumbsup]

I think there were like 2 movies made on Old Master Q.

one quite long ago. the second not too long back

this is manga. Published in chapters.

It's not a comic strip.

Lao fu zi is a comic strip meant for daily publication in newspapers. that's why its short and simple.

Same as Garfield or Baby Blues. Those are comic strips.

Same drawings but different ways of being done.

Just like news on twitter vs the actual website.

I only read 2 comics during my early childhood like before P3. One is "Xiao ding dang" (they don't call it doraemon back in the days) and another is "lao fu zi".  My grandma used to buy for the grandkids when she go travelling.

Always prefer doraemon coz it is easier to read. To understand lao fu zi, must read the cheng yu at the top which is kind of exhausting.

Curious. . Was lau fu zi popular outside chinese populations? Even china?

I think anywhere where there is Chinese diaspora community, will certainly know of Lao Fu Zi. Much like Jackie Chan or Martin Yan, it certainly has a wide reach and brought Chinese culture to many places worldwide.

Those are the precursors to the current weekly/bi-weekly manga magazines like shonen jump.

Just saw this thread.

Yes, heard that 王泽 passed away last week, but didn't see this then. Also, didn't know he's called Alfonso.

When i was growing up, I practically read all the 老夫子 comics when they were published.

My mother till this days still tell my kids that i used to giggle on my own when reading the comics - when she sees my kids now occasionally doing the same thing.

In particular, the 水虎转 series made a deep impression, as compared to the other short ones, which repeated themselves ever so often after a while. It was funny when 老夫子 and gang brought all the modern weapons and ammo back in time to fight with the 梁山 people and the govt...

The comics kind of laid the foundation for me to later move on to 金庸 later on.

RIP to the author. Thanks for the great memories when I was growing up.

When I was a kid I loved Lau Fu Zi so much that my uncle nicknamed me Lau Fu Zi .

I kind of like and prefer 大番薯  [laugh]

A lot of people in my generation will remember the author. I am sure that is of some comfort for his family.
