A Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) team is en route to Hong Kong in a bid to resolve the issue of nine armoured vehicles that were seized in the territory on Wednesday (23 Nov).

The Singapore Consulate General in Hong Kong will also provide assistance on the matter, said a Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) spokesman, who added that the vehicles are training platforms with no ammunition or sensitive equipment on board.

Nine Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles (ICV) were confiscated at the Kwai Chung Container Terminal. They had arrived on a vessel from Taiwan and were bound for the Republic.

The MINDEF spokesman revealed that American President Lines (APL) was contracted as the commercial shipping line to transport the Terrex ICVs and associated equipment to Singapore.

APL was required to comply with all regulations. This included the declaration of transported equipment in the shipâs cargo manifest, as well as obtaining the necessary permits required to transit through ports.

During the transit through Hong Kong, customs officials raised queries on whether the necessary permits and declarations by APL were in order, and in the process detained the Terrex ICVs.

APL officials are working with Hong Kong authorities to resolve the issue.

The MINDEF spokesman noted that all commercial shipping lines used by Singaporeâs military are required to comply with stringent requirements for protection against theft and tampering of equipment during the shipment, in addition to applying for all relevant permits.

These requirements have worked well and there have been no incidents of losses, theft or tampering over the years, he said.

SAF will also review the circumstances of this incident and determine if added measures are required to prevent such occurrences.

Commercial shipping lines all not making money, NOL sold, Hanjin no cash flow to pay everyone.

Many Shipping liners bet on super size container tankers.

But when China economy slow down, most of these containers cannot be fully utilised.

Shipping companies undercut each other to fill up these ships.

So rates are so cheap now.

So those still in operation need to find other stuff to ship.

According to a report by NanyangPost.com, the ship carrying the SAF armoured vehicle had earlier berthed at Port of Amoy (Hokkien Province), the the Chinese were aware that there are military equipment on board the ship. And the PRC authority later tip-off HK Customs authority to act.

Actually nothing wrong to for HK custom to act.

The question now is.

Were these military assets declared to HK customs?

If it happens in Singapore and our customs just close an eye to allow military assets pass through our ports, then it's failure to discharge their duties responsibly.

liddat US Marine Corp won't buy any more Terrex already ... [bigcry]

USMC and ADF are considering Terrex 2 which are fundamentally different in terms of chassis, armor, armament and power pack.

Like like compareing Avante vs Elantra.

But still it will give ideas to defense agencies on 8x8 design standards practiced in western nations.

The 8x8 apc the PLA used are actually quite primitive.

I hope the news are correct in reporting that all sensitive equipment are stripped.

I'm sure they will be interested in the remote gun platform, projectile detector and the internal battlefield management system.

This episode is very worrying. Time for Singapore to go nuclear militarily. If not the idiotic Middle Kingdom wannabe is still going to come knocking on our doors one day asking us to give up our sovereignty to them on a silver platter . Might as well go down fighting.

For time being I just wish their fragile economy does collapse totally.

Nothing to do with APL or SAF not complying with customs procedures. It is all about arm twisting Singapore to quieten down on the South China issue.

With US shifting away its focus on international issues and instead redirecting their resources domestically, sg has really been disadvantaged

You are too simple minded. LHL and his team must have already have an emergency meeting on this issue not because we failed to comply with rules should have always been complied with and not the first time the equipment got transported via HK but rather why China is going all out to send a message to Singapore. It is all about the South China Sea issue. They can buy over our neighbouring countries with their money but not Singapore.

Just had a discussion with my family that we should liquidate some assets in case we have to make a quick getaway from Singapore.

We claim they don't follow the law for the scs issue.

In this case, did saf follow the law?

HAHA!

This time dua-diao liao !

I was thinking this is just a simple administrative slip up in the transit. But it seems there is more meat behind this. Since HK's foreign relation and security are handled by China, that means SG gov and SAF official will need to visit Beijing, rather than SAR to lim-kopi to "商量商量"

No need for Singapore to go begging . Just tell them they can keep the tanks and they be viewed as pariah. What Singapore should do is to increase their training in Taiwan and ship equipment in future via other countries.

No need to tell me. Already planning to have one foot across and reap the fruits until PRC come knocking on our doors that sinkie belongs to them by virtue of 75% of the population here being chinkies. Far fetched? Well if they can claim 90% of South China Sea belongs to them overnight why not a strategically important small country like Singapore. You guys can continue dreaming about it being impossible.
