Like most of Thailand, I only heard of one Thai King. Yest night after he passed away, read up about him from news that were forwarded by friends.

 

Quite a complex life, with him born in US, but grew up in Switzerland before he went back to Thailand to be King when his brother was killed.

 

For 70 yr he served the nation, and was a very well-liked King, revered by all in the kingdom. He was very hands-on and close to the people, and really helped to improve lives of many people, esp. the poor. This is as much as one can ask of a King.

 

RIP to King Bhumibol.

 

Also read about his son the Crown Prince, who's lifestyle... let's just say pales in comparison to the much-respected father.

 

It might be difficult for the Thai people given the huge loss, and also what is to come.

 

Hope it will be a peaceful and smooth transition.

The Thai monarchy is a constitutional monarchy but they the deceased king still have tremendous influence over thai politics.

He also has a close relationship with the Thai army and the ruling bangkok elite.

 

It's not like constitutional monarchs in Europe whereby they are clearly constitutional monarchs. Probably more akin to the Japanese Emperor before WW2.

 

I'm not an expert but from my observation, very simply put, the monarchy favours the status quo whereby their network within the BKK elite stays the same.

 

So a democratic government simply cannot rock the boat ie favouring the masses rather than the BKK elite.

Thaksin and his sister tried to rock the boat. And well ... the pile of bricks (the Army) came falling down on them.

 

All the military coups happened with the tacit approval of the king.

But haha in our self serving nation, really doubt anyone will follow these ex-generals anyway to create unrest lol
