ST front page today.

Quote" .. the wide respect and reverence for him was largely due to state sponsored ceremony and ritual, and the harsh lese majeste law that stifles critical debate on the royal family's role - an increasingly divisive issue over the pat decade. ." Unquote.

That's why ST is a piece of shit.

Not only offending the many Thais in singapore.

Never look in the mirror.

This is true but sounds more like what a BBC/NY times/washington post article would write.

All this extra stuff should be written later.

Like most of Thailand, I only heard of one Thai King. Yest night after he passed away, read up about him from news that were forwarded by friends.

Quite a complex life, with him born in US, but grew up in Switzerland before he went back to Thailand to be King when his brother was killed.

For 70 yr he served the nation, and was a very well-liked King, revered by all in the kingdom. He was very hands-on and close to the people, and really helped to improve lives of many people, esp. the poor. This is as much as one can ask of a King.

RIP to King Bhumibol.

Also read about his son the Crown Prince, who's lifestyle... let's just say pales in comparison to the much-respected father.

It might be difficult for the Thai people given the huge loss, and also what is to come.

Hope it will be a peaceful and smooth transition.

Actually ... ... he has much to do with why the military keeps stepping in when a democratically elected govt "oversteps its boundaries".

He is a unifying force. Not a benign and benevolent one  [;)]

Main reason why Thaksin was removed.

The Thai monarchy is a constitutional monarchy but they the deceased king still have tremendous influence over thai politics.

He also has a close relationship with the Thai army and the ruling bangkok elite.

It's not like constitutional monarchs in Europe whereby they are clearly constitutional monarchs. Probably more akin to the Japanese Emperor before WW2.

I'm not an expert but from my observation, very simply put, the monarchy favours the status quo whereby their network within the BKK elite stays the same.

So a democratic government simply cannot rock the boat ie favouring the masses rather than the BKK elite.

Thaksin and his sister tried to rock the boat. And well ... the pile of bricks (the Army) came falling down on them.

All the military coups happened with the tacit approval of the king.

Well that's why our ex-generals all have to be found new jobs within stat boards and GLCs lol.

But haha in our self serving nation, really doubt anyone will follow these ex-generals anyway to create unrest lol

i heard entertainment joints are closed for 30 days.

so don't visit thailand for 30 days, unless you want to pay respect to the king.

How are the entertainers going to earn a living?
