You are right. I just got the quote to replace the turbo unit on W212 E250 2.0L. It is $5,000 for new, $2k for reconditioned unit. My regular WS is not a turbo specialist and must send to third party.

$5k is too expensive for a new turbo. Pics shows the bottom of the turbo unit has oil flowing out.  Any recommendations for a workshop to change to a new turbo at a lower price?

ask Min Hoe Auto to quote. they can order a new original turbo. then get your workshop to fix. Or any workshop can fit a turbo. just dismantle and install.. max 30-40min for a inline4, unless seized bolts.

then keep the old turbo to see if you can find someone to recond later on. But i dont trust local or malaysian shops to recon. more CON than RE....😁

The problem with a recon, is if not done well... then can lose balance, the impeller and vanes spin at 20k rpm... and good luck when it goes. all the bits will go into the intercooler and maybe even engine... then whole engine gone case.

If you go thailand i think they are pretty good to do car stuff there. but i dont know of any.

I sent turbocharger for repair before, in the 90s

that time not many turbocharged cars

got to give it to workshop that repair commercial vehicles, i.e. lorry, bus, tractor, excavator

mine was leaking internally, dumping engine oil into the intercooler and intake manifold

they replaced the seals, o-rings, bushes, surprisingly they have parts, I also washed the intercooler and intake manifold at home

I remember I asked the guy how he balance the compressor wheel-shaft-turbine wheel combo after taking them apart

tao chiu said, he marked them before taking apart, just put it back following the markings 😁

At times like this, I do miss my previous Legacy GT ride. Turbo problem, I just go to Lim-Tan Motors and they fix it quickly and at reasonable price. They do turbo replacement, mods and repairs everyday for Japanese performance cars. Hmmm, maybe I should ask them if they can replace the turbo of conti cars.

Has anyone got a Merc turbocharger repair specialist to recommend? Mine is leaking oil and probably gas too. No more turbo surge when I accelerate hard. Lim-Tan was my go to workshop for my Legacy GT's turbo. Is there a similar one for Merc?

time to change cars, bro

Currently own a preface lifted C180. Was looking at changing to CLA, GLA or another newer C180. Was looking at the depreciation of a new car and a second hand, and saw that the depreciation of a new C class is 28K, while GLA is around 23K. Was surprised to see this difference being marginalised to C class of 21K VS GLA of 18-19K in second hand market. That is a drastic drop for c class! Is C&C overpricing C class or it is better to buy a second hand c class or GLA seems a better buy with lesser depreciation over time? Not sure about the reliability of DCT in GLA though.

Car Dealers overprice entry level cars becos they know thats where the numbers are.

Similarly Developers overprice small units vs big units becos they know thats where the numbers are too.

Even when you buy Pizza, one slice is $5 but whole pizza with 6 slices is $25

You can say it's sort of like economies of scale.

Therefore, consider getting E class lah

@Andyngps it’s not accurate if u are looking at list price from CnC to calculate depreciation. usually they do have overtrade or promo.

so if u are keen for new, u have to ask the agent directly and calculate the depre from the final price I think.

You are right bro. Massive disc from c n c. But ends up still having substantial higher depre than relatively new 2nd hand for both models.
