What car would you buy with 220k

How can you call it an asset when the moment I drive the car out of the showroom, the car value plummets by at least 10%? 

10% is when you crank the engine; the minute your tyres leave the showroom; its second hand already maybe even more than 10% even depending on brand too

I hv staff who buy new BMWs, Mercs, etc and I know what their pay is. Still amazes sometimes me how they choose to spend their salary. When i tompang them to go for external meetings, I feel like I'm sitting in my bosses car.....LOL.

Of course it is an asset, albeit a fast-depreciating asset. Even in accounting terms it is considered an asset, a highly-leveraged one. If the value of ANYTHING is greater than what one owes, in accounting terms it is an asset and since minimum law now is 30% down recently, and 50% down previously, most cars can be classified as asset. Those people who bought property at it's peak three years ago, are sitting on negative equity on their properties, but yes, everybody considers real estate an asset. So, in every sense, a car is an asset... even the car you are driving in now.

Yeah, i have quite a few signed-on armed forces mates, whose salaries are 4-5ks driving luxury cars.. they are just one expensive breakdown away from financial hardship. But somehow, having a regular's paycheck give them a false sense of security... i don't know why and who are we to question..

What leverage (price over annual income) would meet your prudence standard?

 

Assuming 180k annual and 220k car, transport cost (including maintenance, fuel, car park, etc) is probably around 20% of monthly income, most people would think it is prudent, especially those without much commitment, ie kids, parental support, housing loans, etc. So it really depends. As we grow older, that ratio will start to come down as income rises, priority changes (spend more on family) and retirement planning kicks in.
