How to upgrade Android 4.1.2 Jelly bean?

many moons ago I bought a samsung galaxy tab gt-p6800

its running on 4.1.2 Jelly bean

like to check how can I upgrade the OS to at least 4.3?

I want to install the latest games for my kiddo

Ive checked with Samsung. they said 4.1.2 is the last supported update

think cannot unless you root.  I want to know too as I have an old Samsung tab
