A Liter too Little?

Will things take a change now, when manufacturers rush to introduce TC 1.0 engine that has more horsepower than a typical 1.6L engine (N.A.), and Torque figure matching or even better than that of a 2.0L ride (N.A.)? Will 1.0L engine (TC) return to Singapore and be widely accepted again? Here are some interesting newer 1.0L TC engine to be checked out.

Ford 1.0 EcoBoost

- 140ps / 210Nm

VW 1.0 TSI Twin-Charge

- 272ps / 270Nm

VW / Skoda 1.0 TSI Turbo

- 115ps / 200Nm

Audi 1.0 TFSI Turbo

- 95ps / 160Nm

Honda 1.0 VTEC Turbo

- 129ps / 200Nm

Opel / GM 1.0 Ecotec

- 115ps / 170Nm

Suzuki 1.0 Boosterjet Turbo

- 110ps / 170Nm

Hyundai / Kia 1.0 Kappa T-DGI Turbo

- 120ps / 172Nm

Back then, Cat A was up to 1 Litre.

There were 3 Car Cats for COE.  Untill A & B were merged.

No leh. In Singapore, people buy the biggest car they can get with the smallest engine. Lol.

Altis already Cat B COE.  The diff in road tax is $450.

hmm, so we should go back to the 3 Cat system.  Regress nevermind, just like how the once irrelevant 2 room flat is now relevant again.

In the late-1990s, it was just my wife and me, no kids yet.  We had a 1 L manual Nissan March for 5 years and it served us well.

Cheap to run and maintain, and gave no problems at all.  I still remember I paid $72k for it in 1996 and after using it for 5 years, sold it off for $47K because the COE had gone up.  It was damn worth it.

I beg to differ. These car existed when times of COE prices were in the excess of 60K too. There were still buyers coz car makers put them in the market.

Anyway even if it was cheap and affordable back then I will stay away becoz the safety standards of such cars are appalling. I do not want to squashed like a pancake in one of those.

Such cars no longer exist becoz of more stringent safety and exhaust emissions tests. More steel reinforcement, auto gearbox with more gears and more weight, more luxury and gadgets to compete. More weight will affect fuel economy and exhaust emissions. You can see why car makers aren't making them anymore.

When COE is >$50K, the saving in driving a car with smaller engine become insignificant in real term. Just like when COE hit $80 - 90K just 3 years back, sales of Altis and other Japanese / Korean make are pathetic (and Mercedes, BMW, etc. become the top seller).

I agreed that Safety is the greatest concern for small car, especially hatchback, as it do not have any buffer zone to absorb impact during a crash, be it from the front rear or side. But these car (Kei car and compact hatchback) still exist in Japan and Europe, are still doing well (probably because of tax incentives). You will be surprised that a lot of new technology has been added to modern compact.

got those turbo diesel 1L type?

Not that I know of. Iirc, the smallest turbo diesel is by VW, which is a 1.2TDI. In general, diesel has lower horespower than an equivalent petrol engine, and thus anything smaller than 1.2L (diesel) shall not win any buyer.

Now cars getting so heavy leh. Eg, the current civic, size is almost the same as the accord a few generations ago. All the cars upsizing. Engine need to upsize also.

That is why TC is gaining popularity in other part of the world in the recent years. Same horsepower as 1.6 / 1.8, and road tax is almost half of the latter, why not? What we need is a mindset change...

satelite ERP still aboiut 10yrs away from implementation i think

with the new euro5, diesels are so much cleaner than petrol. in fact most of the new diesels models out there qualify for the CEVS rebates.

so i'm wondering why the heck, the govt still insisting on the special diesel tax?

if it's about the older diesel vehicles that's spewing smoke, shouldn't they have different categories of diesel cars that meets emission requirements?

give car owners some motivation to upgrade to greener cars.

even the CEVS is a joke given that it deducts from the parf value after 10 yrs.

haiz

Actually these cars are more than adequate for Singapore daily use. However, the COE makes a joke out of buying such cars. Now you see people driving monsters to make their money worth.

Maybe when we go for the satellite ERP system, such cars will be back on the road.

There used to be 4 category for passenger car (excluding open cat).

Cat 1: 1000cc and below

Cat 2: 1001 - 1600cc

Cat 3: 1601 - 2000cc

Cat 4: Above 2000cc

Come May 1999, LTA re-categorised them into just Cat A (<= 1600cc) and Cat B (>1600cc).

Now that COE premium is almost the same in the 2 cat, many are calling for it to be merged, and you want to go back to 3 cat?

Actually a little challenging when defining the category, since most of the cars are now 1.0 - 2.0L band, so if we revert back to Cat 1 (sub 1.0L), it is drawing up boundary for the various makes and might create unfair competition (in the sense that Honda & conti will fight for quota in Cat 1, while Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, etc. will be competing in Cat 2, and the other bulk of the car will be force to Cat 3 - >1600cc).

Diesel emit other pollutants beside just soot, CO & CO2, and some of these pollutants are classified by WHO as carcinogen (i.e. cancer causing).

I do agree that CEVS is just a smoke screen to show the world how we encourage going green (but physically taking back half of it through reduction in PARF value). And for that matter, not all "green" car are entitled to a rebate. Sorry, it remind me once again of the Tesla S case...

When I drove up Sheares bridge with more than 2 adults, I would switch off the aircon!  Just me and my wife, it was ok.  Anything more was a struggle.
