The war in Germany was over. And the horrendous losses at Iwo Jima and Okinawa made America planners think that upwards of 6 digits of american casualties in trying to invade the japanese mainland.

 

If comparing 200k of japanese casualties (civilians) vs 100k of your own country's troops, it's a no brainer to use shock and awe.

 

The firebombing of tokyo probably killed as many (at least 60k japanese) as the nagaski and hiroshima bombs.
