Ppl always say CVT no good. I also don't know why no good. hope this will enlighten me.

because CVT is belt transmission, others all are gear transminnsion,

ppl always think belt transmission based on friction, so transmission efficiency low than gear,

actually now CVT belt made of steel, transmission efficiency much higher than before,

read from some U.S auto forum, now CVT transmission efficiency higher than conventional AT, this is why CVT got better FC,

CVT has infinite gear ratio unlike torque converter AT. I doubt CVTis widely used now.

Nissan has non-belt driven CVT.

The new Altis is CVT also the new Nissan Qashqai. Even the new Ody is CVT.

Seems like many Jap makers moving towards CVT?

even if many ppl don't like CVT, but can predict CVT/Hybird will the main stream transmission in such limited oil resource on the world,

Japan always lead the trend of world auto makers

It is temporary measures for the japanese auto maker until figure out what to do next.

Temporary? CVT has been around for many years and now becoming more popular. Dun think its temporary la.

even if many ppl don't like CVT, but can predict CVT/Hybird will the main stream transmission in such limited oil resource on the world,

Can see Conti cars going for small CC turbo charge and Jap cars going toward hybrid.

Going forward, it will be EV or Hybrid vehicles. Electric motor will replace GB.

Of course temporary. CVT revival was in past 5 years especially Toyota. Newer Toyota engine has not improved tremendously in term of HP/Torque. On the other hand, with ever tighter emission rule, the only way out is CVT. Most of these vehicles are below 2L. CVT has its limit in the torque it could handle.

Toyota is pushing very hard on Hybrid or Hybrid plug-in. That's the future it is heading.

Anyway, to each individual. Some ppl like the look of the car or brand, buy becos its cheaper or other factors.

CVT or not, some ppl like some ppl dun like.

Rather than looking at the belt & whistles, ppl should open their eye on the technical part of their car especially Jap.

Not every one like CVT & not every one can get used to CVT.

Its hard for keen drivers to like CVT gearboxes.

There is no direct relationship between the accelerator pedal position, engine speed and road speed - or the so-called rubber band effect. When you step hard on the accelerator, engine revs rise and stays, while the road speed slowly catches up. When the desired speed is reached, engine revs drop. No rise and fall of engine revs, no gear changes = no fun. The response time between cause and effect is slow. And some CVTs whine loudly when slowing down.

Of course, its more efficient than a conventional AT, because it allows the engine to stay in its most efficient torque range, and at cruise speed engine revs will drop to the lowest level due to its infinite range of gear ratios. And since power doesn't have to travel through a fluidic torque converter, there is less transmission losses too.

One development is the CVT with fixed gear ratios, as in the new Corolla Altis. It uses CVT but simulates the gear changes like in a normal AT. I haven't experienced it, but I would like to know if its a good solution to the CVT woes.

Thanks for the useful information, think you r right abt the pedal/speed relationship and the low rpm when cruising.

now i understand.

anyway so many estimas on SG road since 2006, and recently alphard/vellfires, and all CVT, so oklah new Harrier for reliability...

if the CVT comes from Japanese, don't worry about reliability,

I juz saw 1 unit of Harrier this morning. It is a very nice looking car as compared to RX.

But

it looks smaller than previous Harrier/RX as well as current RX.

thinking I have to change my traditional concept liao, have to accept "SUV" only FWD,

due to oil going to dry up about 50 years, fuel saving become SUV's top function instead of off-road performance, Now less and less AWD SUV in the market,

I don't understand since accept FWD, why still buy SUV, sedan is enough

Hypersonic

Check on it during the Cats carnival at EXPO.

The dashboard material look and feel good.

But I was very dissappointed on the rear seat space. NO so big, plus the rear seat bench width seems to be very small. 3 adult sitting there will not be very comfortable. The tight support was also feel a bit short.

Obviously the old version base on RX will have a much much comfortable seat.
