As long as there is no security issues, I am willing to try ...

But hor, you guys can try it out first ... and once iron out all the minor issues, then I will jump in :D

Good for those that don't take trains much la. My grandparents hardly take the train. They always take the bus or taxis when they need to travel so they find it a hassle to have to go to train station to top-up ez-lnk card.

I think the "free" is many years ago.

A few weeks ago, I tried the ezlink app. It wanted another 30 cents for convenience fee.

So I stopped and went to the station to top up instead.

my wife has the card reader at home.

She tops up her ezlink card from there. Think 50 cents fee.

But worth the $, cos she never goes to the bus interchange or MRT station.

I have been doing this, I use it to pay for fast food and my backup card for my IU cash card. Best part, I can top up on the go.

New NFC-enabled SIM cards may not take off for now: DBS Research

Commuters can now tap their smartphones compatible with Near Field Communication (NFC) to pay their transport fares on buses and trains, just like using an ez-link card.

SINGAPORE - It may be a while before the newly introduced NFC (Near-Field Communication)-enabled SIM cards become widely used in Singapore, but this is unlikely to impact the three telcos, DBS Group Research said in a note on Wednesday.

Reacting to Tuesday's unveiling of these SIM cards, which let users pay for bus or train rides and shopping by tapping their NFC-enabled smartphones at over 30,000 EZ-Link acceptance points, DBS analyst Sachin Mittal said one reason the cards will not take off for now is that they are incompatible with the iPhone - which commands more than a third of the smartphone market in Singapore. The SIM cards can be used in 19 smartphone models, including those of LG, Samsung and Sony.

NFC comprises a set of communication protocols that enable two electronic devices - one of which is usually a portable device such as a smartphone - to establish communications by setting them near each other.

The iPhone supports only Apple Pay, a mobile payment and digital wallet service by Apple. iPhone users will thus see no reason to fork out nearly S$40 for each of these SIM cards.

Apple Pay has been "quite successful" in the US for its user-friendliness and security features, said Mr Mittal, who pointed out that Apple Pay makes contactless payments secure with "Touch ID" authentication. "Even if an iPhone is lost, it cannot be misused by anyone; a lost Visa payWave card, on the other hand, can be used by anyone."

He added that NFC-enabled payments do not add any security feature to the user's EZ-Link card; Apple Pay, on the other hand, offers security to credit-card transactions, "so we do not see that the NFC-enabled SIM-based payments will be widely used".

Why can't I have one card for all .... :ninja:

Yahoo : Here’s why new NFC SIM cards may flop in Singapore

The service is too costly.

Singapore’s telco operators recently unveiled new NFC-powered SIM cards, which will allow commuters to pay fares using their mobile phones. The SIM cards will also be accepted at 30,000 ez-link terminals across the island.

However, the new SIM cards might fail to gain enough popularity because of several stumbling blocks, according to a report by DBS.

The report noted that the popularity of iPhones in Singapore is a big hurdle to the rise of the new SIM cards. The NFC-powered SIM cards are incompatible with iPhones, which only support Apple Pay and make up a third of mobile phone sales in the country.

DBS also highlighted that ez-link is not accepted at 7-11 stores and many other retail outlets, which prefer NETS and credit cards.

Apart from these hurdles, the cards are also extremely expensive at $37.50 apiece.

“EZ-link is not widely popular for retail transactions even in Singapore. Plus NFC enabled payment is not adding any security feature to the ez-link card while “Apple Pay” adds security to credit card transactions. So we do not see that the NFC enabled SIM based payments will be widely used. Anyway, telcos may not get much commission out of the transactions, as the bulk may go to ez-link for its

large customer base using it for buses and trains,” the report noted.

Try this. I have seen someone using this before in the US. Don't know if it works in Singapore or not. Looks good for those who have lots of credit/debit cards.

You really wanna spend 30 minutes trying to convince the store clerk they can use this to swipe?
