Still2016 Twincharged April 11, 2016 Share April 11, 2016 Personal opinion: Some days I feel real sorry for LHL. He had a very protective life and now that LKY is no longer around he had to fend for himself. In politics there are no friends and no enemies, only depends on the time and who is calling the shots. The old guards and the new generation leaders are believe, there is some discomfort, probably generation gap. I postulate that the younger generation leaders can wait for the old guards to retire so that they can do what they think would be better. The old guards (at least some) cant wait for the younger generation leaders to trip and then say to them in the face, I told you so. Very similar to company politics. While LKY is around, he was the force who held everybody and everything together. No matter how much each individual dislike they still will obey, whether out of respect or out of fear. As of today, there are fault lines appearing starting with within the family. As for BB bi-election, it is a foregone conclusion that the ruling party will win. But it will be very telling if they score less than what they had previously which would give SDP ammunition to soldier on for the next generation election. I am also pretty sure there are some ruling party MPs wishing in their heart that BB falls into the opposition. But who are these people. Will these people some day switch camp. Also some days I feel real sorry for CSJ too. It was a pity that he tried earlier tactics were not what Singaporeans can accept earlier on and thus was branded a rouge. He has since slowly but surely renewed faith among the people of Singaporeans but still people are suspicious of him. With no track record of running a town council and previously he wanted to farm out town council to WP, these will disadvantage his winning. Furthermore, WP is already struggling to keep town council running with 5 people what can he do with just one. People in BB are worried what happened if their toilet flush and all back-flow and the rat problems. Everything seems to be against CSJ except short of a miracle. Personally, I am of the opinion, that what really matters, is what benefits will either candidate bring to the people of BB but more importantly Singapore as whole. As Singaporeans, we are "all equal" and hence why should an opposition area be denied of infra-structure improvements and that is something I cant figured out especially government should be bi-partisan. Hence, the latter should be the more important issue.

Hence, the latter should be the more important issue. The unfairness of tying municipal issues to the duties of a democratically-elected member of our legislature is especially obvious during a by-election. At the risk of simplifying things, this can account for why PAP has lost the past 2 by-elections. One strategy for SDP is to focus on this issue, but no... SDP will talk about human rights, anti-death penalty, freedom of speech... things which albeit important have no market in Singapore. Slightly surprised that they actually started a town council committee to take over, just to show people that they can handle municipal issues too. That's like not agreeing with the system, but playing by the rules for as long as they are in the system. It makes them... WP. Unless screw up during nomination day, it will still be MIW even the candidate did zero walk around during campaigning. Last election over 70% vote count. With no major issues to discuss, ground unhappiness, traditional strong ground, I don't see how the result can turn out otherwise. 23% margin is just too wide. At the very best margin of victory reduced to around 10%.
