Queensland River Set Alight in Coalseem Gas Protest

A Queensland river has erupted in flames as politician Jeremy Buckingham ignited gas bubbling through the water in a protest aimed at drawing attention to the dangers of CSG.

Mr Buckingham performed the stunt in protest of coal seam gas in the region, and says there were flames visible for more than an hour.

Origin Energy said the nearest gas wells were several kilometres away, and also said they had started seeing "more bubbles than there used to be". Origin Energy also stated that attempts to ignite the well-known seeping gas was neither safe nor responsible. They also said "the seeps pose no risk to the environment or public safety, providing people show common sense and act responsibly around them"

(edited)

Such strange scenes of seemingly spontaneous combustion have also become common in areas where fracking was done.

I'm impressed by how Canadian govt work to manage the residents evacuation process, and no report of looting or any unrest happening

Comparing to New Orleans hurricane Katrina, US should be ashamed of how new Orleans was managed during the hurricane. Canada, many see it as the poorer cousin of US, did far better than US in times of crisis.

You have neglected to compare the population sizes between Fort McMurray and New Orleans. FM is several times smaller.

Also since you were referring to instances of civil disorder, may I also add that NO as a city is much worse off in terms of social development than FM. It is vibrant and colourful no doubt but it is a slum city as far social development is concerned.
