GrabHitch sees S$41,800 in payment fraud, 10 suspects nabbed

https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/grabhitch-sees-s41800-payment-fraud-10-suspects-nabbed

I wonder how the scam works

I also wonder too...  but guess the police should not disclosed the full details.

but a few questions I had in mind.

!0 people arrested with 13 suspicious drivers' account? The number doesn't add up.

2000 fraudulent transactions which means should be having at least a few victims since the money need to come out from someone accounts and also grab should be getting the transaction fees too unless the scam is to cheat grab of the transaction fees which mean got insider inside grab between those arrested?

i was wondering how also....could be rider and driver both take bookings for each other but there were no such trips happening.  the driver pockets the cash, the passenger debit card don't have the cash balance and cannot deduct thereafter?

that's my guess, but i also not sure if debit card no balance in bank can still successfully book a hitch ride.

i did hear of real life cases before that husband is the grab hitch driver and wife is the grab hitch passenger.   why they do it this way?

1) earn credit card points on wife's spending
2) husband earns incentive when grab is running a promo campaign for 2 trips per day paid from grab's pocket.

The case you mentioned is one of the way to save more money for the couple as the wife maybe able to claim for the grabhitch ride from the company she work. Since can claim, may as well let husband earn. Maybe some taxi drivers and PHV drivers are doing that too. It's legal. Let own people earn the income since going to pay and claim.

Grabhitch $ so little yet some people willing to defraud the company..I only hitch when it’s very near and super convenient.

You say amount so little but look at the figure $41,800. That's a lot of money.

Hey guys ..I've been doing the occasional grabhitch (once or twice a week) and today on checking my wallet found that there had been constant deductions throughout May 2019. What could it be for? I know the 10% fee only starts in June. Any ideas? Ranges from $0.50 to $1.70 each time (total 10 times!) and I do not use grab wallet for anything else.

The 10% platform fee started in June 2018.

Seriously, its not worth doing hitch. The fares are pathetic and now you need to pay Grab 10% of your fees as commission.

Passengers can cancel anytime which means you make a wasted trip to pick them up,  and they make you wait and you end up incurring parking fees. They dirty your car and you need to clean it up after them.

Have been doing quite often nowadays. Most riders are ok.

You do more you move up the tier. Commission cut from 10% to 8% to 5%. Somemore if the rider no show, can claim 50% of the fare.

5% is not too bad la.

I rarely stack though.

The 10% platform charge should be per trip / per hitch charges, so the charges vary on the trip charge, if that trip is SGD5, then they will be 0.50 platform charge. If you make 2 trips that day say 1 s SGD8 and another SGD12, then the platform charge will be 0.80 and 1.20.

Email them.

$1.70 is weird unless you do a $17 ride.

Agree fully.

Unless you drive a hybrid car, the extra dollar don't really worth the extra time and mileage.

The old bird used to have:

1. 0% commission

2. occasionally hit certain trip per day will get incentive

3. Monthly incentive ($80 - $150)

4. plentiful rider to choose from.

Or you have a car abut to be scrapped where mileage doesnt matter any more.

It is not easy to reach the "Champ" position and retain it. You have to die die do at least 2 hitches for all 30 days to meet their points. I used to be in the Champ category but recently grab removed the CBD pickup \ drop from the 3X points. So, I am not able to meet the 35K points. Now in this quarter in Pro but from next month, i will move down to the next tier of 10%.

I didn't know there was a $17 possibility but there is - a potential ride from Pasir Ris to Tuas South. I used to think $16 is max.
