How come AGO never go question TP, their failure to nab speeding commercial vehicles had resulted in how much losses daily or annually?

Precisely. If TP does decide to take some concrete action against speeding commercial vehicles and for not keeping to the left lanes, their collection in fines for one week can cover the parking fees collected from all teachers in one whole year. Just need to employ one cisco personnel with a video camera mounted on a motor bike for each expresway  and go around recording all these vehicles not keeping to the left, even if TP have problem recruiting enough TP officers. Just need to redeploy 3-4 outsourced CISCO personnel from the side of bus lanes onto roads and the resoruces can be maximised to triple, quadruple the fines collected.. AGO should expand the scope to such areas if their primary goal is fairness and maximising collections.

MOE would have overlooked that imposing parking charges in schools will result in illegal parking and jams outside the schools with all the resultant costs. Parents instead of waiting inside the school (many schools still allow this)  to pick up their kids will now end up waiting outside the school.

 

Then the next thing they'll do is station those LTA/TP outside the school to summon all these who park there illegally.

This entire thread if out of point and out of focus - a result of people not reading and anyhow comment. It's about charging parking for those lecturers and tutors in ITE and poly etc.  Suddenly people start crying foul about charging parking for teachers in primary and secondary schools. And these lecturers and tutors etc are not as lowly paid as you think such that they can't afford paying for parking like other working adults. In fact, every time I see someone being interviewed on TV about investing in third or fourth property, there is a very high chance that this investor is a teacher. If these lecturers or tutors are not prepared to pay parking charges for use of scare space, then just take public transport. What is the furore about?

It's not as simple as that, just because educators are assumed to be highly paid, then therefore they should pay for parking.

 

Luckily for the braniacs that came up with this idea, singaporeans are very obedient and docile.

 

If this stunt was tried in western countries, then the teachers would just work minimum hours, go home on the dot, citing parking charges as a factor. Or likewise, can arrangement be made for them to work from home, no need to report to office unless there are classes?

 

I am quite sure this will happen to some extent, quietly. In the end, our own children that attend schools would suffer the knock-on effects.

Parking spaces in university, polys and other higher education institutions take up scarce resources, especially in land scarce Singapore and students pay significant tuition fees, with further subsidies from tax payers. Are you sure overseas colleges don't charge parking charges? If students have to pay the parking charges, I don't see how these lecturers or tutors should be subsidised. Parking charges are few hundreds a month? How much do these lecturers make to cause them to make a big fuss about it? Those lecturers that take public transport can save up on these parking charges and have a higher take home pay. Those that want the luxury of driving to work just have to pay parking from their salary. It's about time we stop viewing lecturers as VICTIMS. Even students despite their school fees pay parking.

Though you have rightly pointed out that the AGO report is meant for ITE and poly, it will have a knock-on impact on all public schools if MOE is made to tweak its policies relating to staff benefits across the ministry.

 

I think you have overgeneralised teachers and property investors. Objectively, teachers are not among the highest-paid professions in Singapore, and subjectively, I don't think they are very well-paid considering the hours they put in. If you are using season parking as a yardstick for salary, then I think most of us are very well-paid indeed. Although land space is scarce in Singapore, those designated carpark areas in each school can't really be converted into any residential project or wet market, can they? Why make teachers pay for such spaces then?
