I think go easy on the neh part.

I know our Indian MCFers are quite chill about it. But i think sticking to the term "Indian Nationals" would be good. [nod]

Tiongs is ok. Cos we chinks don't mind [laugh]

Okie bro, it's common knowledge we are all referring those from that continent, not our local brothers

chart-singapore-economy-losing-momentum%     Chart of the Day: Singapore's economy has been on a downward slide for the past five years

The city-state's slowdown is among the worst in the region.

After decades of impressive growth, Singapore's economy has been on a steady downward slide since 2010, reveals a report by Deutsche Bank.

"The city-state’s economic performance has wavered in the last five years. The step down in growth can be explained by a mix of
cyclical and structural forces. While Singapore’s heavily export-oriented economy struggles with stagnant global trade, at home, it is dealing with a tight and aging labor force, declining productivity, and heavily leveraged corporates and households," said the report.

The chart shows that the overall economy has been increasingly losing momentum after a strong rebound in 2010. The weighted average of the growth rates of retail sales, credit, industrial production, non-oil imports, residential transaction, PMI, and employment has been negative for the better part of the past six years.

"The past five years, however, have seen a steady deceleration in overall output and per-capita incomes. While evident across the region, Singapore’s economic slowdown is one of the most severe,” Deutsche Bank noted.

I heard over the radio this morning. If I remember correctly, the economic growth forecast of US, which is a much advance economy then ours, has a better growth rate than ours. This is worrisome

Coe defying the trend though. Lol.

Though housing seems rite

you don\t know most singaporeans have poor financial planning.

they only bother about now or short term and never think far enough.....

to them is "buy now, worry later" or "as long as monthly installment is less than a 1k", lets do it....

But they never foresee crisis may happen from time to time and their jobs is not iron bowl....

Agreed with your general assessment that we should be prudent and prepare for crisis and don't take jobs for granted as our economy has been blessed so far but may not be so in the future, touch wood.

That said, when it comes to car buying, logic can go out of the window as it's one of our prized possessions and aspirations, abit like when women buy branded goods esp handbags. Paying thousands of $ doesn't make sense on a piece of leather but likewise paying hundreds of thousand $ also doesn't make sense for a piece of metal haha!

I disagree that Singaporeans have poor financial planing.

I think we have excellent financial planing.

So many people have sold off stocks and holding a lot

of cash to take advantage of any down turn.

Many people and companies learn from the

Asian Financial Crisis and also from the Lehman

Brothers Crisis.

I really wish that chart

was the price of COE.

:D

I wish the same. However, cat A and B coe are now largely use for commercial purpose and profiting. It is not a fair game anymore.

This is a very important and useful chart.

When my staff ask me for a pay rise. I will be showing them

this chart and tell them. Economy not doing well, how to give

you a pay rise?

Anyone has a chart that shows going up?

Maybe cost of living or COE etc?

The managers also want to ask for a pay rise

and we need a chart going up to justify.

It doesn't matter if the rise is very gentle

I will just compress the size to make the rise

look very steep. Then maybe get a bigger pay rise.

:D
