Buying a used car always set aside some money 2-3k to fix stuff. Aceept that and owning a used car can have good savings.

Anyway new cars ain't that great these days some brand have so many problems within the 1st year. Makes you wonder if you bought a new or used car!

If the service was done all the way at AD and u can get them to divulge the info to u... otherwise, IMO, unlikely.

What u can do is to send the car for assessment with places like AA to check its condition before u buy.

Once u bought, check or change away all the critical wear and tear parts, such as timing belts, hose pipes, wiring, as they may well be worn already, don't forget the lube like gear and engine oils too.

Not sure about overhauling, but I suppose the mechanic should be able to tell if u needed that.

And ya... old cars have much lower depreciation.. like a c class merc, new is about 15+k and old only 7k or so. That was the last time I did the calculation. Now with lower coe, the old car dep will be even lower.

New car... probably not much lower...

Bro, you mean the 2nd hand car dealer allows you to send car for inspection before you decide to buy? Got such thing meh? My colleague told me he was not allowed to test drive . . . Huh?

My personal choice.

1. Honda Civic 1.8 (FD)

2. Honda Stream 1.8

3. Toyota Camry or Toyota Wish.

+ AA inspection and mileage < 200,000 km.

My colleague bought a toyota wish with 175k on the odo. Depreciation is around 7k. So far so good.

Yes bro, should be able to negotiate.

The inspection fee u may want to bear all or share. Not expensive anyway for a peace of mind.

If they disallow even an inspection then it may mean they got something to hide.

Better walk away from the deal.

Yes. I went down to the car dealer and had a look at the car and was reasonably satisfied with the condition of the car.

So negotiated with the boss on price subject to AA inspection. Dude know I was a serious buyer. Placed a $1k deposit and then they sent to AA for me.

I suppose the only times I would waive the AA inspection would be if I were buying from say Select, Premium Pre-Owned, Wearnes Pre-Owned, Republic Auto etc where they have already inspected and are throwing in an extra year of warranty. Or if I am buying from someone whom I know is yim jim about maintaining his car.

Road Tax info you can probably find on onemotoring. There is a 10% step up somewhere along the way, but I don't know the exact details.

Re insurance, perhaps this article may be useful for a starting point.

I have a COE Nissan. Just before COE end, went to Tan Chong for major service and check-up.

Still, 9 months later, had to change radiator and fans.

Mileage is just above 100k.

Cost $1k with change of exhaust box at a workshop outside.

Evo5sg, may I ask how much more are you paying for your insurance? Is yours comprehensive coverage? and which company you bought from? Thank you :)

Mine with AIG. $800++ for my COE vios. If 3rd party only $500++.

I'm quite curious, for comprehensive cover, when in accident the insurer will pay you back base on? Cos coe car got no Parf value, so if the accident need 10k to repair, the insurer will pay out meh?

The additional cover also provides personal accident benefits for the driver and medical expenses arising from the motor accident; things such as death, injury etc. For minor accident likely they will cover the repair; windscreen repair is inclusive, if not likely they just ask u to scrap and take back the balance COE. It's just a difference of about $300 just get for piece of mind. Driving is a high risk event.

The premium in my case was similar to when the car was less than 10 year old. Yes NCD apply.
