Just learned that the southern uses Deepavali while the northern uses Diwali … how true is it , frankly I also not too sure lo ..

In the near future, we will scrap Tamil and replace Hindi as one of our national language. Just like everyone is using Diwali.

From what i know, more or less. 

Those who hail from india even 2nd generation, usually call it Diwali. 

But i guess it's like lunar new year vs chun1 jie2 etc.

I feel it's ok.

It's like China official language is Putonghua and even Taiwanese also can understand, though some words have different prounciation but same meaning. 

If India push for a single official language then overseas Indian should follow the same official language. 

While still maintaining the dialect or local colloquial.

India has many other languages with their own adherents. Besides Hindi and Tamil, there's Malayalam and Telugu and believe it or not, movie industry in these languages. Had a good ex-colleague who was a Malayalee from Kerala! [laugh]
