but i read about the collision thingy you must be travelling at 30KM/H and below. if over the speed limit it will not react in time.

Is that true?

I think it all boils down to what are your priorities. If you look at the latest consumer reports on 2015 reliability report, and i quote them

"Nissan’s Infiniti brand has continued its downward trajectory because of similar problems with its InTouch infotainment system.", the InTouch infotainment system has got reliability issues.

Having seen and tested the Q50, i am thoroughly impressed by the amount of technology fitted as standard into this car, and that it has the longest wheelbase in its class, that C250 engine and tightly controlled panel gaps. A finely built car body that is strong and reassuringly thick which could have contributed to its high kerb weight. The weight does blunt its performance, yes, you can feel it at the wheel, but it rides well, has loads of room and is extremely good value for money. A Mercedes engine and gearbox are both things you can trust to last a long time. And that is an important trait to consider.

But really, the key selling point of that Volvo is their City Safety and some of their specs have Collision Warning with Active Braking (Volvo specs are inconsistent with their models, so do checkout what is offered). I cannot remember how many times have this often overlooked safety feature saved me from a collision, from hefty insurance claims, from being part of a chain collision etc. It may or may not be your fault.. it could be that you were deep in thoughts while driving... but that safety net is there to catch you when you fall. And that reassurance cannot be quantified. (refer to videos below).

Yes it may not have the nicest of interiors - e.g. that telephone pad just looks ugly and messy but when you are going to dial, it is the fastest way to do so (voice dialling doesn't work well), but it sure has the most comfortable seats and is just such a pleasant car to live with everyday. Volvo is an understated brand, something that you don't buy to haolian or haolian unintentionally. Often being bullied on the roads but when you prod the throttle, you leave most of these bullies in the dust (of cos with the more powerful models). Not everyone appreciates a Volvo, especially now that it is under Chinese ownership. That is perfectly understandable. And also the reason why i get unintentionally excited when i see and test the other cars in this class. But at the end of all those adrenaline-pumped days, there is still no place like (a Swedish) home.

Collision Warning in action. It allowed me to react a few milliseconds earlier.

Collision Warning with Active Braking in action. I did not step on the brake, the car braked itself.

We and the other Volvo friends all cannot figure that out too...

City safety is not a license to drive badly or not pay attention. [laugh]

In the Mondeo it behaves similarly, the story is basically that it is usually only able to fully mitigate a crash (i.e. no contact) below 30km/h. If you want it to be higher than that it has to brake earlier (which can be annoying for people) or you need even more powerful brakes.

As stated it's there to assist you and not for you to never touch the brake manually.

Was told previously by some Volvo SE as well as Volvo drivers (V40s) mostly that the City Safety had no real warning... I see yours has a row of LED warning lights. Is yours the latest generation S60 T5 drivE?

I have a very similar collision warning system on my car.

Thanks.

Value and specifications aside, I normally look at this first world problem from my own perspective. Which one would I enjoy driving day in day out for the next few years? Which one makes me curious?

Most of us started off with Japanese or Korea cars. So a switch to continental would be interesting. Volvo does it differently from Mazda or Infinity. Furthermore, there is always another chance for the other 2 brands further down the road unless you intend to make this your last car.

I would take the Volvo at this point.

I like to try cars at different end of the spectrum if I can. Makes it more interesting. The only brand I have gone back twice is BMW. Life is too short to be stuck in one car. Volvo do make very interesting cars. In fact, the S80 was a very close option when I decided to get the Skoda. In the end, the Skoda got the nod because the RS wagon was just too entertaining to pass. No regrets on that one. You cannot get a Skoda in SGP anymore.

Got 3 friends who bought q50. No complain so far and prob the quietest among the 3. But again, they had it for a few months only so hard to conclude. Got another sold his mz6 within a year. Complained about noise and lack of bhp. Another s60 sold away within a year too. No idea why though. In terms of reliability, i do not know which to choose though im looking at q50...

If you regards Infiniti as a Nissan, then the reliability of the 2 MIJ brands should be better than Volvo. If I'm associating myself with one of these brands, I think I would buy an Infiniti over the other 2 since Infiniti lineups suggest luxury and sport. For people who doesn't knows about the brands, I will just disregard their views.
