You need a good tripod and a camera that can at least give you 10 seconds of exposure. Check google. You can find many tips on taking aurora there. My canon compact camera should be ok then... But the battery life sucks!
Jman888 Moderator October 1, 2015 Share October 1, 2015 I believe iPhone os fine if you are not going to do post editing. compact camera battery will drain like mad and even freeze in cold weather. For phone at least you can play with it to keep it warm.

Dice 3rd Gear October 1, 2015 Share October 1, 2015 (edited) u need a decent camera with manual setting, compact camera cannot set to MF, in dark your compact camera will have a hard if not impossible time of acquiring focus and remember you need to focus to infinity otherwise you may get blurry images of stars in the background. u probably also need a decently fast lens ie large aperture. i think if it is a trip u have been planning for a long time and perhaps wanna just enjoy, then i would just suggest to sit back and enjoy the aurora, u may catch it, u may not, depends on condition... rather than worry about capturing it digitally, just capture it in your memory. but if you are bent on a photo, can find resources on youtube on the settings and what to do and if dont wanna buy a camera, u can rent one with a decent lens and perhaps with a tripod. Kklee 6th Gear October 1, 2015 Share October 1, 2015 A camera that can meet the minimum requirement will be able to take the Aurora Borealis. Sensor size and speed/quality of the lens will determine the quality.
