Buying basic car and then upgrade

Yes there are thousands of people doing this .

The easiest and cheapest mod would be to add stickers , one sticker extra 5bhp.

Stickers would still cost money.

Mod the driver. That is free of charge. The car can be 100% stock but improvement on the driver's skills would bring the drive and potential of the car to another level. [:p]

I know the boss of a famous workshop in Singapore who did not only this, but a full cosmetic refit to his F10 523i. From looking at everything except the engine bay, the car is a double of mine. White also.

It's nowhere near as expensive as buying a real M5, but it's not exactly cheap to do it up fully. And everything is changed, except what really matters, IMHO.

I would never do it, for the same reason I wouldn't wear a fake Rolex. I would wear a Casio (in fact I often do) anytime over a fake Rolex.

I think I know who the boss is too....his workshop used to be at bukit batok area?

Not sure about that, but he's not there now. Better not say more, he should have his privacy.

Makes sense to buy a basic car and then slowly upgrade.

One eg. is leather seats. Absolute waste to strip the brand new cloth or velvet upholstery. Might as well use it at least for a year or 2, before upgrading to leather, which is also cheaper to get fitted outside than through car distributor.

I did that. But only because I knew the parts I wanted was available. Got a second hand car really cheaply. No electric windows, electric mirrors, reverse camera even the rear seat also cannot knock down. But I knew a workshop with another identical car but with all the frills. Managed to get all those parts at a good price and transferred them over to the car I just bought. Even the whole rear seat also change.

Was it LPPL as in getting a complete carwith everything then to go thru the hassle and cost of upgrade.

I know this term mod is new to me or definition.

To me, mod is like change to bigger turbo, LTA non compliant

My view is when the parts worn like tires and you change new tires, how to consider Mod?.

Petrol run low pump v power , mod?

wiper worn, change to non oem bosch .. mod?

Cos 10 years only, it makes more sense to do all your upgrades upfront so you can enjoy it for the full 10 years. But it also means a big hole in your pocket upfront....

How many really buy new Plus drive 10 years?

the first mod you need to do for this car is the gearbox

there...i helped the VW haters say it first

:D

I also think swapping to wet gear box of the earlier generation Golf GT is the way to go.

Somehow, no workshop has manage to code the wet gearbox to a dry gerabox even when its a one to one attachement ...

Depends on what you are modding. Engine is hard to mod so it is better to buy a higher spec model if you want performance and upgrade the handling. While i like modded cars as they make our roads more interesting to see, i dont like poser cars or cars with modifications done inappropriately, such as the camry with gt wings i saw the other day.

stealth mod .. and only can feel by the driver is nice.

I supposed the word is tastefully modded.

But some people like the look of over dress slutty auntie as in the case of GT wing Camry

And some try very hard to make a donkey run like a stallion as in the case of kencil in malaysia..

Can go fast and when you out of luck, then cannot stop in time... very bad things happen.

If modding an old car, it would make sense to extend COE after that? Especially if you spent a significant amount of time and money on it... wasted to scrap it after 3-5 years.

For me its because I was able to get a good deal for this no frills car cuz the owner can't sell it off. Hard to sell off when it has hardly any features. Purely a point A to B car. I also managed to get a good price for the parts I needed cuz I knew the workshop had a car going to scrap with all the parts I need. Got it for a cheap price and paid some labour cost to install the parts. Changed the mirrors, window mechanism, door cards, rear seats and added the reverse camera plus the screen from the donor car.The donor car was wrecked but interior was in good condition. Recouped some of my money by selling off the reverse sensors and fog lights which I did not use.

I guess those were considered mods. Just not performance mods only. It improved the usability of the car.

I felt it was worth it as I am the kind who drives a car till the COE expires. I have never changed car before COE expired before.

I believe hardly mod I do to my cars.

I cover backrest with white tee-shirt for slightly cooler feel when the car had parked in the open.

Installed piggy-back air filter element.

Re-configured spark plugs.

for discussion, does spark plug swapping to another type really work?

I did a swap sometime back and was worst off then original...
