hope this is the right section, went down to sports museum at kallang stadium yesterday, felt so proud seeing the silver medal the great tan howe liang won at the rome Olympics in 1960. this was the era of simple n basic training methods n facilities, no sports science, no huge monetary rewards, no multi million dollar training facilities, no professional coaches.....

during 80s, used to head down to the demolished stadium gym n had on numerous occasions, met the great Mr Tan Howe Liang, who never had any airs n ever helpful, teaching us how to use the equipment there.

Hes a true Son Of Singapore, not an imported FT, proud he could win a silver medal for our little red dot. together wif ang peng siong, who in 1982 was the worlds fastest man in the pool, should inspire future generations of home grown talents like the quah family n joseph schooling n others

Tan Howe Liang won back in the days where the support was not like what it is today with sports psychologists, masseurs, dieticians, doctors etc being part of an Olympian's entourage.

He didn't have that luxury then and if not mistaken, he may have also travelled by ship to Rome, not to mention meals were alien and you miss the weather and home due to the prolonged period away.

Yet he won silver which is a credit to the man and I can only say, I salute you!!!!!

He's also born in China, immigrated to Singapore when he was four. Actually in his days many Chinese are born in China and immigrated here. So was my grandfather. We are descendants of FTs really.

I didn't know we have a thread here for my ex-neighbor and a coach for a period of time.

Poor guy, I just wonder if he is still around? Probably he is much over 80 and closer to 90 if he still around.

Back then, he was one guy I see that sports cannot make money😥. I also remember he got one Hyundai Excel and then forced to sell away cos someone whom he acted as a guarantor run away. His life was full of sports but life was not complete as a family
