dun like this type of small lift for low floor building, the block only got 4 storey, the lift at most can take 4 people, 3 if you are big size, and took forever to go up and come down.

I hope more singaporeans or malaysians will go into the lift maintenance business. It's an unattractive working environment to work.

 

More important is that the lifts are maintained correctly. All mechanical items will have issues just like our ageing MRT.

maybe those people facing tough times in marine/O&G technicians will want to consider changing job.

I was watching a documentary on lift maintenance last year. 

It seems like a fairly recession proof industry. They really boh lang to employ. Almost all are malaysians.

 

Going into lift shafts i guess isn't more dangerous than those on ships where they have to climb long ladders or gangways.

The key problem is the licensing authority farm out the responsibility to QP.  As long as got QP chop, they issue licence. collect money and wash their hands. 

 

QP reply on contractor. Just conduct random checks. dont sign no contract because they can always find another more willing QP to sign. 

 

people actually doing the maintenance are as cheap as they can find. contract calls for schedule, just put head count to meet contractual obligations. who supervise works? 

 

this chain has to change. not only for lift. and escalator.cheap labour is the key to all these problems

Lift maintenance is mostly electrical. So they must get ppl with electrical knowledge.

- sensors

- control panels

For my company's vessels, the lift onboard is maintained by Electricians. And there is an annual check by appointed shore company.

 

Just checked, the lifts were fully maintained by Electricians only for my company.

Lift technology is not new, there are many lifts all over the world. Some lift can go as high as 50-60 level at one go. Imagine these lift breakdown. How sia? But did we actually heard of news that all the lift breakdown at the same time for tall buildings? Why our newly built Hdb lift so unique keep breaking down and some in super dangerous way? Hmm..

Usually office building lift usage are much greater frequency than residential lifts and most goes much higher floor

Nowonder... Erm.. 67.5kg per person? Omg.. What if all 4 people all weigh 80kg go in how? The maximum allowed weight is too little already.. Should have more buffer. Just like buildings, got buffer for surface load right? If not later floor collapse due to too much load how?

Woman taken to hospital after Jurong lift drops

 

SINGAPORE - One person was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital on Saturday night (July 1), for what The Straits Times understands were injuries sustained when the lift she was in dropped suddenly.

 

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it responded to the incident at around 9.40pm and dispatched a red rhino, a fire bike and an ambulance to the scene.

 

A woman in her 30s was taken to hospital, they said.

 

She was in the lift with two others, and the occupants had managed to evacuate the lift by the time rescuers arrived.

 

On Sunday, Ms Raudhah Putri, believed to be the injured woman's niece, wrote about the incident, which occurred at Block 542 Jurong West Avenue 1, in a Facebook post.

 

According to Ms Putri, her father, uncle, and aunt were in lift D of the HDB block when the incident happened.

 

She said that her father had been about to make his way out of the lift when her uncle heard a snap and quickly pulled him back inside.

 

"It was a close one though. If it was late, I couldn't imagine his leg getting stuck outside while the lift made its way down," she said.

 

Ms Putri wrote that the lift then proceeded to fall four storeys, stopping only when it got stuck "halfway below the ground" on the ground floor.

 

Ms Putri said that her aunt injured her leg when the lift hit the ground.

 

Ms Putri's father tried to force the lift door open, injuring his hand in the process.

 

She said: "They didn't know what would have happened if they were to stay longer in the lift."

 

Ms Putri wrote: "Before this, there was an accident happened (sic) but it was a group of boys and none were injured. This matter was brought up to the Town Council and the MP while they made their rounds in the neighbourhood. The MP was informed about this matter upfront by the residents and even after a year, no action taken."

 

ST has reached out to Jurong-Clementi Town Council and to Ms Putri for more details of the incident.

They should just bring back the practice of showing the certificates of maintenance for HDB lifts.

 

Anyone noticed that since they stopped displaying certificates of maintenance in HDB lifts since 2008, there have been more and more cases of life accidents?

if you ever went into those lift, it can hardly squeeze 4 person, and to squeeze 5 overweight people inside, they should do the maths before boarding.

But still should have set some buffer.. Not what exactly 4 person x 67.5kg..

 

Meaning, the effective load can carry say 270kg to be displayed on the lift. However that should not be the max load. Set buffer and have max load that can carry of say a factor of 1.5 times and that will be 405kg. Of coz the sensor should still work to activate at 275kg, but just in case the sensor is not working, at least there is buffer for it.

With obesity on the epidemic level average weight of 67.5kg, was 20 years ago. Now average weight is 80 kg.

Lift manufacturers should update their specifications with times.
