this reminds our authorities that local still got talent, don't go the easy way and import talent

invest in our locals

they know... how would they not know... it is just whether they want to nurture or not.

u see those china documentaries.. they selected and nurture since like little pre-schooler age.. easily 10 years of investment.

in sg.... are they willing or not <_<

Thumbs up to him!

When is he going to serve NS? (Just kidding!)

Also to the Netball team.

True blue Singaporeans.

Table Tennis? No pride in that at all.

Congrats to Schooling!!

INCHEON: Swimmer Joseph Schooling won Singapore's first gold at the Asian Games in the 100m Butterfly finals in a Games record time of 51.76 seconds, edging out China's Li Zhu Hao who ended up with silver.

This is Singapore's first men's swimming gold since 1982.

The 19-year-old came in second at the turn behind Li, however the Chinese swimmer ran out of steam. Japan's Hirofumi Ikebata took bronze.

Hope today, he will get the 50m fly ..... [bounce2][bounce2]

and become first in Singapore history for getting 2 Gold medals in Asian Games .... [smash]

he might be the first male swimmer...but definitely not the first Singaporean to do so

that honor belongs to the other swimming female legend...Junie Sng.

Too bad netball not played in most major games like the Summer Olympics .. more of a British commonwealth game like Cricket.

I believe his NS was officially deferred. To be honest, we can be more flexible about NS deferment. 18-19 year old is usually the prime for any kid to excel in sports, and even arts .. let more people defer 2-3 years, then come back to serve their NS liability. If they want to run away, then they are no different from the ungrateful runaway PR and scholars. AFAIK, most of these sportsmen serve in SAFSA anyway .. does little to help national security, and doesn't help national sports letting them play in SAF leagues.

From another point of view, he is already serving national service, winning medals for Singapore as a true blue Singaporean!

The forgotten heroes of Singapore .. many young people don't even remember Ang Peng Siong who was world's no. 1 in 50m freestyle at one time. Isn't it sad ??

IIRC, 50m wasn't a recognised event back then... so while he was the fastest, the media response wasn't that great.... it was only introduced into Olympic a few yrs after that feat.... by then he punc-chek liao

Swimmer's competitive life span is very short... at most 8 years. which is good enough for 2 Olympic/Asian/Commonwealth games... Joseph is already 19.. not really young by competitive swimmers standard.... 2016 Rio Olympic will be his best chance for any success at the pool..

the Chinese guy tat lost to him was only 15 yrs old ?

Then you will find many other people serving national service as doctors, sportsmen, artist .. then no one will serve for national security.

didn't a certain MP mention that ?

he didn't serve NS but was a medical doctor for years ??

this kind of debate will never end...

I am OK with deferment and when they do serve, they can be assigned to units which can utlise their skill set after learning how to fire a SAR 21 within 2 or 3 mths.

Nobody mentioned that his parents sent him to train at the world's top swimming school at own expense. How many Singaporean parents will be willing to invest time, effort and money in sports, and also willing for their kids to take the risk of losing out in Singapore's scholar-driven society ?

Deferment is OK, and I think it can be more flexible. But definitely not exemption or replacement. Our army is made up of primarily NSmen, and it is not just about firing AR-15, M-16 or SAR-21 .. those who has been in active combat units will know.

must have enough money also... if i have 20m i have no qualms to spend 1m to help my son try achieve his dream

but if i only got 1m and want me spend 1m to try help him... i think hard lar....

this is where SG is lousy at...
