eXacTo 3rd Gear July 14, 2015 Share July 14, 2015 Surprised that nobody posted this: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-33524589 New Horizons: Nasa spacecraft speeds past Pluto Nasa's New Horizons spacecraft has made the first visit to Pluto, speeding past at 14km per second. Earlier, the space agency released the most detailed picture yet as it hurtled towards the dwarf planet on Tuesday. The probe was set to grab more pictures and other data as it passed 12,500km from Pluto at 11:50 GMT (12:50 BST). Controllers got a last health status report, before the robotic craft turned its antenna away from the Earth to concentrate on its target. We have completed the initial reconnaissance of the Solar System Alan Stern, New Horizons chief scientist Only when New Horizons has its trove of images safely in its onboard memory will it call home again. This is not expected to happen until just after midnight (GMT) into Wednesday. It means there will be a long, anxious wait for everyone connected with the mission, as they hold out for a signal that will be coming from almost five billion km away. But scientists already have colour data from the approach and said they might release a new picture later on Tuesday. Images set to be released on Wednesday will be more than 10 times the resolution of those already published. New Horizons' flyby of 2,370km-wide Pluto is a key moment in the history of space exploration. ↡ Advertisement

Volvobrick Supersonic July 14, 2015 Share July 14, 2015 (edited) Looks a bit like our moon. It is really amazing the talents and dedication of those scientists and engineers, running projects that runs into decades, controlling a small machine so far away! Maybe this photo will inspire the next Transformer movie to hide the Decepticons behind Pluto! PS If the US can control this small machine so far away, it should be easy for them to control fly-size spybots in China Russia.....to report when Putin takes a leak or what President Xi has for supper. Nhyone 4th Gear July 14, 2015 Share July 14, 2015 (edited) As a species, we must be concerned about space. Dinosaurs ain't here anymore cos they didn't have a space program. It doesn't really matter if Pluto is a planet or not. But if you have 1 hour, you may want to watch the "killer" of Pluto give his reasons: How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming Edited July 14, 2015 by Nhyone
Count-Bracula Twincharged July 14, 2015 Share July 14, 2015 The journey itself is just as interesting. 9.5 years! Wah!! They named the blackish blob below Pluto 'The Whale' Part of Clyde Tombaugh's ashes is on board the space craft and will be placed by some means on Pluto. Shull Turbocharged July 15, 2015 Share July 15, 2015 Some interesting fact about Pluto: The diameter is smaller than our moon, in fact, the 2D image of Pluto can fit in North American continent. Pluto's moon, Charon, is about half the diameter of Pluto. Because of the relatively big size of the moon when compared to Pluto, they revolve among a common centre of gravity/rotation above the surface of pluto. This, in contrast to the earth and our own moon, rotate around a point way deep inside the surface of the earth. All along, we have imagined Pluto to be a dark, freezing world, but the latest pictures from New Horizon shows surprisingly complex surface features in a reddish brown colour, very much like Mars. Too chim for our understanding ....... Its only for the 0.0001% of the world population (rocket scientist & astrogeology) to understand... Not really.. many people like me who are interested in astronomy are following this closely.. It's not that difficult to understand..
Lala81 Hypersonic July 15, 2015 Share July 15, 2015 The distance between the outer planets and the sun is just staggering. And yet is insignificant compared to the vastness of space. ↡ Advertisement
