I got a question: can I connect an access point to another access point?

M = modem

R = router

AP1 = access point 1

AP2 = access point 2

S = network switch

———— = lan cable

Can I do this?

M——-R——-AP1——-AP2

Or do I need a network switch between the two AP and the router?

M——-R——-S————AP1

.......................|————-AP2

The ..... doesn’t mean anything. I just have to put it there to show that AP2 is connected to S

Simple ans - Can connect AP to AP.

Which GCB is this? [laugh] [laugh]

Does your AP1 and AP2 has 4 ethernet ports? if both have then both setup you propose should work, as long as the router is the only Dhcp server.

Currently mine is

PC1 -----|

              |--S1(a router disabled dhcp)-------Router |-------|S2 ---HTPC/TV/Media player

PC2 -----|                                                            |-------|S3 --- Nas1 and Nas2

So it seems, the switch can anyhow put as long as your have enough ports and only one Dhcp server which is the router.  AP with mulitple ports are also switches.

Go like this

M——-R——-S————AP1

.......................|————-AP2

R and AP1, AP2 must be on the same network.

That means all the connected ports must be something like this:

If the network is 192.168.0.0 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Then R can be 192.168.0.1

AP1 can be 192.168.0.2

AP2 can be 192.168.0.3

Can. You just configure the AP2 as "Bridge mode". Go to settings look for bridge mode.

M——-AP1—connected via wifi—-AP2

SSID and password set as the same as AP1.

The two AP will be connected wirelessly. Quite easy.

I may be a little rusty here, but your connection depends on how you want to design your network.

Switch - connects multiple devices (or hosts) together in the same network

Router - connects different networks together, and sending packets from one network to the other and vice versa. In most home routers, it just connects the home network typically private IP like 192.168.x.x to the internet (publicly routed) IP assigned to the modem.

Hehe

Mustank

all the bros here acknowledge you are THE Guru here

may i seek your advice

Starhub is giving away free linksys EA8100 router but I am thinking of getting EA9500S

currently using Linksys EA7500 but lousy in penetrating walls (especially toilet - bombing cannot play MCF)

your advice - you think worth getting the EA9500S for greater penetration

thinking of investing in inksys Velop (Triband) but not sure how many we need because there seem no way to calculate or assess until you set up the router first

currently, I am using two router piggybacking on the other to extend the reach but not satisfactory

your advice - can avoid buying MESH with EA9500S

Thank you guru Mustank
