Singtel ISP is using vlan tagging to separate mio tv and internet access connectivity. 3rd party router need vlan tagging support. Usually if you buy locally most router already have a preset configuration for Singtel. You just need to google the instruction. Below are two well known router brand that have instruction and youtube video on the configuration for Singtel connectivity.

https://www.tp-link.com/sg/support/faq/938/

https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1034975/

M1 does not have such issue as M1 does not offer video streaming services via proprietary box, instead they just resell 3rd party video app services like Viu and so on.

For Starhub still have not decided to give up on their proprietary box and go fully app based. They still want offer the digital divide old timer a tv box to switch channel with app. The only good thing is that they do not have the vlan tagging implemented. Therefore any 3rd party router can work easily without special configuration.

Just few days ago a Singtel contractor came to my house to upgrade the ONR and give 2 free wifi6 mesh devices as promotion for 2Gbps service upgrade. Had been using Google mesh for a few years but even with 3 mesh, also cannot serve the 2 storey house fully and got quite a few deadzones where speedtest can drop to low double digits. So quite skeptical about this free mesh package but decided to try out since is free.

But the devices really blown my mind way as after experimenting with placements for the 2nd wireless mesh, all corners inside the house are covered with weakest speedtest achieving close to 200Mbps! If I take away the 2nd mesh, the speedtest dropped to single digit straightaway, so it is really attesting to the performance aspect. Fyi my 2 storey house each has about 1600sqft.

Not sure how reliable the mesh routers are, but really satisfied now.

Google mesh is actually comparatively very slow. Google mesh is like an AC1300-1900 system only iirc.

Yes but definitely good enough for my family so far just that even with 3-packs, still got dead zones. In fact I just bought a new piece few months back thinking to complement the current setup but never use yet. Now is collecting dust already.

I'm currently deciding between M1 500Mbps vs 1Gbps plan as new signup.

500Mbps is $29.90/month with no router. Basic router (Asus RT-AX55 or TP Link Archer AX72) will be an add on of $5/month.

1Gbps is $39.90/month. With new signup promo (first 3 months free + free basic router) does that mean my effective price is (21 x 39.90)/24 - 5 = $29.91 ? If so then 1Gbps seems like a no brainer?

In truth 500 is more than enough bandwidth for my small family needs, yet it seems that for the same price then I might as well get 1Gbps?

You don't have any router lying around? Why need a new router?

My room is using an Asus router from these free promo. Bought off carousell brand new in box. But cannot return type as it's not a retail purchase.

Think I bargained until 80-100 bucks due to the above.

I have a Linksys EA8100 and unused Nokia beacon (from 1 or 2 years ago) at my parents' place.

Internet usage is mainly video streaming, 3 pax.

Do not be too obsessed with the speed as it is more important to consider how many in the family are using it during peek hours. The technician shared with me that the upgrade from 1Gbps to 2Gbps in my case would not result in visible signs like faster download speed but more that with many in the family surfing net watching video at the same time, the higher speed package would be able to better support the steaming and not cause drop in speed. But if only got 2 or 3 members using the link, then not really necessary to upgrade unless the link is also used to support any set top box for high definition video streaming like netflix or Disney+.

I'm certain that 500Mbps is sufficient for my family's usage, now I'm obsessed with the price/value lol

I’ll go 1Gbps.

it’s not the number of pax, but the number of devices connected (sometimes concurrently)

my family has 4 phones, 1 android tv, 3 tablets, 2 Apple Watches, 1 PC, 2 laptops and 1 Nintendo Switch connected. That’s 14 devices.

And on some days, there will be Netflix, Zoom, gaming and web surfing happening concurrently among 5 devices at the same time.

I’d rather “overpay” a small 33c extra per day for 1Gbps to have that bandwidth catered for concurrent connections.. than go for 500Gbps and then have doubts whether it’s enough when 1 of the connections (eg Zoom) starts dropping.
